The competency process is in full swing for those wishing to register as a Building Inspector. The chaps in the Penrith Office are now booked onto exams with BSCF later this month 🤞 One is taking the Domestic Inspectors exam and the rest are taking the General Inspectors exam mainly because we cover the Eden Valley which has two National Parks, we don't have any tall buildings and there is almost no chance we will. Personally, I have been involved with a good few assessment panels over the last month or so and it's interesting and challenging at the same time. If I was to offer any advice to those undertaking this route I would say: 1. Be realistic with the class of buildings you are seeking on your registration, you need to evidence your experience and involvement in your technical report. There will be questions in the interview! 2. Be familiar with the Approved Documents and guidance documents, especially those areas specific to the class of buildings you are being assessed against. 3. Be current with the new legislation and the processes and procedures, remember an RBI can work for either a LA or RBCA. 4. Read the Codes of Conduct, the BICoF requirements and importantly prepare for the interview. 5. Lastly, don't overreach, stick with the building types you know. Good luck!

From the time a home is drawn to the time it’s created to being sold. The amount of brain power and work to make that reality exist is incredible. From engineers, builders, laborers, inspectors, real estate agents, lawyers, officials, technicians and trade specialist, landscapers etc. We take this for granted! During this process things happen, get messed up and not everyone in that mixing pot has the max skill level. This is where a good inspector is worth the money. A good system in any field has checks and balances. But don’t builders have a QC program and have to pass county inspections? Absolutely and not to down play the importance of county inspectors and building quality control but a third party home inspector is not the same. It is a complete different inspection. Roof to crawl we inspect it all for safety and function. Code is the minimal requirements met by the state/county. 2 different but equally important pieces of the puzzle.

How many items are on the punch list given to your company by the clients inspectors? What is the number that can be questioned and are wish list items by the client and not covered by the procedures and standards agreed by the contract? Who many are down to poor workmanship and have been down to supervisors not checking their workers work? Who many have been marked up by the contractors QC team and not acted on, over ruled by the Constitution management to meet a deadline? If the list is in 100 items or more, why is there so many? No ones perfect you will miss some?

Pleased (and relieved!) to say I’ve passed my Registered Building Inspector assessment with CABE as a Class 3 Specialist Building Inspector (H1/H2). I’ll be registering with the BSR just in time (hopefully) for the April deadline.   I’ve read lots of posts from people on the registration issue over the last few months which I’ve found extremely helpful during my own application which has inspired me to share my own journey to this point. I actually left Building Control in December 2023 but quickly realised how much I missed the role. So much so that I’m now back in Building Control after just three months away. We’re all aware of the problems the industry has but being away from it gave me a chance to appreciate how amazing this job can be. We get the chance to work on a great variety of buildings, to influence the design and use of buildings for the better, to engage in challenging technical issues and to meet a huge range of people. It’s a cliché but every day genuinely is different. As professionals, we should be proud of the work we do and the built environment we help shape.   All of us who have gone through or who are currently going through the process to become a Registered Building Control inspector know the sacrifices we are having to make, both in terms of time and emotional energy, to get certified. There are no shortcuts in the process and finding the time to undertake our own applications as well our day jobs in such a short period of time is putting immense pressure on people. The reward is the opportunity to continue to work, in my view at least, one of the most rewarding, challenging, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately best jobs out there.   It took me to temporarily walk away from Building Control to truly appreciate how fantastic a role it is. However you feel about the registration process and the pressure it is putting on you, don’t lose sight of why you do this job.   Good luck to everyone going through it.
