One of Longy’s exciting new courses for the fall semester is String Quartet Seminar: The Imperfect Story of the Perfect Instrument. This class is a survey of the great works and traditions of the form through history and a hands-on performance lab where great works of the repertoire and new quartets by Longy student composers are workshopped and presented in concert. Historically underrepresented works are reviewed, as are groundbreaking ensembles and luminaries of the field. Performance practices are explored and dissected, and terminologies and techniques are de-mystified. Special attention is paid to current and historical DEI considerations and the active programming of composers and performers from underrepresented communities. #musicstudents #gradschool #musicians

🌶️🌶️🌶️ Hot Take Alert🌶️🌶️🌶️ Performing arts organizations continue to fall prey to a common - and recurring - problem: Your programming announced in your Season Announcements is not attractive and is alienating/dividing your prospective audiences. Audiences wish to be wowed and look forward to something new and/or innovative (which I fully recognize has costs associated with it), while also seeing something tie directly to the mission. They look for both meaning and impact. There is a very niche group of your supporters that want to hear the next performance of Beethoven, or Bach, Sibelius, Mahler (a personal fav), or a concerto featuring one of your core musicians. Those are all fine composers, works, and projects to add to your season calendar - but what are you doing to shift with the changing times? Growth happens in a place of discomfort - I think it’s time for performing arts organizations, globally, to grow a bit. ✅Don’t be afraid to push bounds/get ambitious - both musically and in mission ✅People will get uncomfortable - be okay with pushing that and be informative/helpful ✅You can’t make everyone happy - be okay with a dip in “retention”

🎶ELA Basel Primary School students are getting ready for the Scala production! Why do we have 2 school productions at ELA Basel? What are the benefits they bring to our students? Here's why participating in a school musical is more than just a performance—it's an enriching experience that shapes young minds and hearts: 🎭 Promotes Creativity and Self-Expression: School musicals provide a platform for students to express themselves through music, acting, and dance. By stepping into different roles and embracing diverse emotions, our students learn to think outside the box and turn their classroom learning into tangible artistic expressions. 🎤 Builds Confidence and Public Speaking Skills: Through rehearsals and performances, students develop the confidence to speak clearly, project their voices, and communicate effectively. This experience bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world communication, empowering students to articulate their ideas with poise and assurance. 🤝Fosters Collaboration and Teamwork: Together, we shine brighter! Putting on a musical production requires collaboration and teamwork among students, teachers, parents, and staff. From learning lines to coordinating costumes, students work towards a common goal, mirroring the collaborative nature of real-world projects and professions. 🏆 Provides a Sense of Achievement and Belonging: Let's celebrate success together! Staging a school musical is a monumental achievement for our students and community. It instils a sense of pride and belonging as students work hard, support each other, and create unforgettable memories that last a lifetime.
