Using one of the most advanced energy system models in Europe to calculate the impact of digitalisation on energy consumption, they found that “digital lifestyles”could save between ten and twenty percent of energy in 2050 compared to 2020, according to the scenarios under study. The researchers report on their findings in the journal Energy Policy. For her calculations, Stermieri used the Swiss TIMES Energy Systems Model (STEM), which has been developed over years of painstaking work at the Energy Economics Group into a powerful model for simulating an energy system. Six million equations with six million variables represent the Swiss energy system and the interactions of technologies, energy and emission flows, and sectors. The variables are linked to each other in many dimensions, also across time and space, via the equations. This allows various scenarios to be calculated up to 2050, the year in which #Switzerland aims to be carbon neutral. However, STEM only considers the techno-economic aspects of the energy system and does not provide any information on socio-economic factors. This is why Lidia Stermieri has docked another model onto STEM: the Socio-Economic Energy model for Digitalisation (SEED). Folks who know me often hear me talk about the "total value proposition"... aka what is needed to provide the consumers end product/service. Electricity is a great example. Sanjay Vijendrans post frames this beautifully. components of an energy solution are critical, but unless those components can impact electrons to outlets there is more to be done.
I see much debate these days in the mainstream media and online about the relative costs and merits of the various energy sources being deployed globally to decarbonise our societies and meet growing energy needs. Most often, people point to low - and still rapidly falling - generation costs of some technologies as evidence that these technologies are clearly the 'best' solution in meeting our future energy needs and that others, with potentially higher costs and longer deployment times, cannot and should not be part of the solution. Almost always, costs are compared on the basis of generation costs only, without consideration of the substantial (usually dominant) transmission, distribution and storage costs that would additionally be required to get energy to where it is needed, when it is needed, without fail. I'm no energy expert, but I've learned a lot about the terrestrial energy system in the last few years and what's clear to me is there has been a dearth of systems-thinking in the field of terrestrial energy that has led to some very narrow thinking on the topic that is widely prevalent today. This seems especially true amongst the general public as well as technically-trained professionals from other fields who have not looked deeply into this very complex and nuanced subject. What is often overlooked in these superficial discussions is the need for an energy system of the future that satisfies the Energy Trilemma. As the figure below indicates, the Energy Trilemma is what drives the choice of mix of energy sources that will ensure a system that is simultaneously environmentally sustainable, affordable and secure. When trying to solve this trilemma for a nation or region, inevitably a mix of sources will be needed with no single source on its own able to meet all three needs today. The current focus on low generation cost of some technologies to the exclusion of investment in other sources, both existing and in development, needs to better reflect this through solid systems-thinking. Next time someone tells you that this or that energy technology is all we need, ask them if it properly satisfies the Energy Trilemma when deployed at scale, anywhere and everywhere in the world. 📢 Exciting news! Together with my colleagues Prof. Hasan Mehrjerdi and Prof. Peter Palensky, we published a paper entitled“Risk-constrained bidding and offering strategy for sector-coupled electricity-hydrogen systems incorporating accessibility level of mobility sector” in the Journal of Cleaner Production (IF=11.1). In this paper, we addressed two key questions to take important steps to turn green hydrogen into the major driver in the end-user supply chain, especially in the mobility sector: (1) how can integrated electricity-hydrogen energy system operators develop a robust market-oriented approach as an operational roadmap to take advantage of synergies of electricity and hydrogen facilities in day-ahead electricity markets? (2) how can these operators use the existing opportunities in the mobility sector in advancing their goals considering the accessibility levels of different types of vehicles? We established a coherent decision-making framework to mitigate the risk posed by soft and hard uncertainties on the economic interactions of integrated electricity-hydrogen energy systems in energy markets while respecting the accessibility level of the mobility sector. Furthermore, the net present value (NPV) analysis was contemplated to evaluate the economic justification of establishing integrated electricity-hydrogen energy systems in the long term as well as attracting investment flows.
