Last week, I had the chance to attend the 2024 Economy for the Common Good International Conference. The number of brilliant projects and inspiring panelists gathered at this event was truly incredible! I almost ran out of ink while writing down ideas during the round table with Lebohang Liepollo Pheko, Kate Raworth, Christian Felber, Jason Nardi, and Paul Schenderling. The project Agricycling presented by the farmer Pieter van der Valk captivated me with concrete insights on how to make the Dutch agriculture system more sustainable but also fair for its workers. Moreover, it was great to hear about thoughtful educational programs, such as SPARK the Movement and PINE: Plataforma de Introducción a Nuevas Economías, that are already preparing the knowledge landscape for the inevitable global transition we need to face. I learned about the etymology of the word economy, which comes from the Greek ‘oikonomia’ – ‘oikos’ meaning house and ‘nemein’ management. As a society, we have lost touch with this original purpose and are letting the capitalistic “economy” destroy our home planet. However, capitalism is not a self-sustaining entity; we can all contribute to moving away from this obsolete model towards any of the nearly 30 alternative future-fit economic models that were mentioned during the conference (e.g. circular, degrowth, true pricing, ECG, economy of the commons, sovereign money, sufficiency, care).
