The Benin Moat, also known as Iya in the local language, is a remarkable historical and cultural heritage site located in present-day Edo State, Nigeria. This system of defensive earthworks surrounds the ancient city of Benin and stands as one of the largest man-made structures in the world. It serves as a testament to the engineering prowess and ingenuity of the Benin Kingdom, reflecting its rich history and cultural heritage. 1. Constructed over centuries, the moat system played a crucial role in safeguarding the city from external threats and invasions, highlighting the strategic importance of Benin as a regional power in West Africa. 2. As per the NEMA license, some 255 acres comprising 185 acres (75ha) of bamboo, 35 acres (14ha) of montane forest, and 35 acres (14ha) of moorland will be affected by the road section passing through the Aberdare Forest Reserve and National Park. A study conducted by the universities of Nairobi, Oxford and Amsterdam to look at the potential socio-economic benefits of the proposed road in 2020 revealed no socio-economic benefit of building the road. #NoAberdaresNoLivelihoods #SupportAberdareRoadAlternative #AberdareYetu #CancelNEMALicence

The 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗛𝘂𝗯 (3 years in the works, to be launched this year), under the lifelong commitment of 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 Shem Wandiga to chemical and environmental safety, stands united in compassion with the community facing the aftermath of this tragedy. Profoundly bewildered by the preventable nature of such incidents, we extend our deepest condolences and solidarity to those who have lost loved ones or suffered harm. At the core of our mission lies the belief that chemistry principles can create positive bonds between people, fostering safety and well-being. Regulatory technology, imperative for enhancing compliance in African environments, could have played a pivotal role in averting the Embakasi tragedy. Our commitment to preventing future calamities is resolute, and we advocate for the implementation of 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 of emissions, offering an early warning system to validate citizen complaints about the "smell of gas." As we take a moment to honor and remember those we have lost, let us collectively pledge to create safer and healthier environments where everyone can thrive. Looking ahead, our upcoming 𝗙𝗲𝗯 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟭𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 holds a crucial space for collective learning and innovation. In collaboration with our German innovation lead, StartSomewhere, we will delve into sustainable building practices using hollow concrete blocks to create safer houses in rural areas while addressing urban density concerns. Sunday Feb 11th, Oliver von Malm will explain key safety design principles for any building. Fire separation distance between buildings, a key safety measure, will be emphasized, highlighting the importance of affordability from a total project cost perspective. Integrated sensors and AI technology will be explored as tools to enhance safety detection, ensuring a resilient and secure built environment. Join us for this transformative event to discover the interconnected solutions, from non-toxic water piping to safe hydrogen gas infrastructure, reducing chemical pollutants in agriculture, and providing employment opportunities for natural science graduates through EcoChem labs. Road building impacts #springs and poses a threat to the #WaterSecurity of local communities. We are working with partners to address these threats through a pilot project in Dhankuta district, #Nepal, combining guidelines for green roads published by MetaMeta Research and the Department of Local Infrastructure (DoLI) with our tested six-step spring revival protocol. The Transboundary Master Plan for the #Grand Mano Landscape comprising Yawri bay, Sherbro River Estuary in #Sierra-Leone and Lake Piso in #Liberia, is of key importance to the implementation of the Union Européenne-funded Programme PAPBio (C1- Mangrove) programme, for which IUCN is the lead partner. #New_Publication While urban green spaces remain the lungs of cities, sustaining their ecological balance, the increasing rate of urbanization and urban development poses significant threats to the existence and sustainability of these ecological resources. In our recent study, we conducted a case study of Damongo and Kintampo, examining urban residents' perceptions and urban planning perspectives on green spaces in Ghana's built environment, using the New Environmental Paradigm.
