“AI leads to layoffs.” Be careful with who is saying that. One of the major concerns about AI across industries is that it will cause layoffs. That people will lose their jobs because AI will be able to do their work for cheaper. This may have been the case with some layoffs. And it will likely be the case with some future layoffs. But we do need to be skeptical when we hear this. Large layoffs have always come in waves as big companies respond to market forces and to their own pursuit of profit. And this has always brought them some negative attention. So imagine the relief now that these big companies can scapegoat their layoffs on AI, instead of admitting that the layoffs were to increase their bottom line for the benefit of shareholders? And, doesn’t it look good to those exact same shareholders to hear that the company is so “cutting edge” that their tech can already replace workers? My point is that there are two big reasons why a large corporation would blame layoffs on AI. Even if AI had little or nothing to do with it. It takes the blame off of them AND it looks good to their shareholders. I am not saying that there haven’t been layoffs due to AI. Or that there won’t be. I am just saying that the narrative and the truth are rarely the same thing. And that the narrative can be manipulated to benefit big players. What do you think?

Mark my words, we are going to see job losses in many industries due to AI. Hearing rumblings of the potential lay offs already, in big multinationals. The change will happen in data insights, sales enablement, legal, finance, marketing, compliance, sales and many repetitive task roles. My prediction the layoffs will start this year. The companies will be profitable but see the maturing AI/Generative AI technology as a way to increase profits further.

Brian Our generation will suffer the consequences of this lack of imagination. Your kids will adapt. In a war for talent, where's the imagination? Why are leaders asking 'who can we cut?' instead of "How can Generative AI boost productivity in a shrinking talent pool?" The talent creates the content on which AI trains. No talent no content and AI gets dementia , se AI or Model Collapse. The short-sighted focus on AI as a job-killer astounds me, especially in finance and consulting. Jaron Lanier's 2023 New Yorker article, "There Is No AI" (https://lnkd.in/dWwimUYW), urges folks to stop mythologizing AI. 🗝 quotes: 👉 "The easiest way to mismanage a technology is to misunderstand it." 👉 “The most pragmatic position is to think of A.I. as a tool, not a creature.” 👉 AI is "an innovative form of social collaboration." That AI is an innovative form of social collaboration is an idea that makes total sense and provides a new dimension with which we can rethink its impact. Tech gurus and their followers perpetuate the myth of inevitable job loss. But it's simply wrong and creates a dangerous sense of defeat. Recent research (https://lnkd.in/dZG7krz9) suggests AI can accelerate learning in call-centers, improving the work of mid-level employees without impacting skilled ones. AI disseminates best practices and it doesn`t kill jobs. My experience confirms this: AI increases productivity, it doesn't replace humans. With employee engagement already tanking (https://lnkd.in/dd5GZKtX), leaders would be wise to reframe the AI discussion: it truly is a tool for positive growth. For me, AI is a personal assistant, copy editor, researcher, even a Spanish bureaucracy navigator. GenAI hasn't led to a lot of layoffs, yet, but there's a brewing belief that it could and likely will -- not exactly a recipe for building trust (and engagement) at work. I've been in enough conversations with leaders to know that most think the short term impacts of GenAI won't be sizable layoffs -- some reductions in customer support and content development, perhaps. But it's already impacting hiring. I know of some tech firms that have reduced engineer hiring, particularly among new grads. Moving from a pyramid with lots of new grads at the bottom, to more of a diamond-shaped organization structure. And The New York Times reports some banks are looking to see “how deep they can cut their incoming analyst classes." As the father of two kids new to and entering the workforce, I'm concerned about the reduction in first steps in a career ladder. Fewer investment banking analysts isn't the end of the world -- but fewer job opportunities for new grads isn't great for their opportunities to grow into those next roles. AI and layoffs. Is AI just a cover for a deep recession that has obviously begun. Blaming AI for thousands of layoffs seems more like a cover for bad economic news. Can’t someone, anyone be honest. Please! We need truth to make cogent arguments and decisions. Without truth we’ve already lost. Trust does not exist without truth and leadership cannot lead without trust. So let’s start being truthful or the truth will eat us for lunch.
