Far too often, I hear and see people sacrificing their nights and weekends, pouring unpaid hours into projects. It's a cycle that breeds false narratives and skewed expectations. While I understand the desire and passion to deliver, it leads to missed personal opportunities which are crucial to our own personal development. Moreover, this culture of overwork not only harms individuals' well-being but also perpetuates a harmful norm within technology. It's time to challenge the notion that working longer hours equates to greater productivity or dedication. Let's prioritise efficiency, work-life balance, and the value of our time. Ultimately, by valuing our own time and setting healthy boundaries, we can foster a more sustainable and fulfilling work environment for everyone involved.

Finding work-life balance in the complex and demanding field of technical support engineering is a complex challenge. The foundation of any tech-driven business is its technical support engineers, who offer crucial assistance to keep systems operating smoothly and effectively. Due to the necessity of handling urgent situations that may develop at any time, their employment frequently entails unpredictable hours and inconsistent work schedules. The demands of this job, including the need for quick responses and being available 24/7, can make finding a work-life balance especially difficult. But not all Technical Support Engineers have an equal level of satisfaction with their work-life balance. A multitude of things influence it, such as the ways in which their employers operate, the degree to which the workplace culture is helpful, and the personal limits that the engineers themselves establish. Some people might do well in this changing environment and keep a pleasing balance, but others would feel like the odds are not in their favor. Adopting flexible schedules, utilizing time-management strategies, and having a positive workplace culture that actively supports striking a good balance between work obligations and personal fulfillment are all essential components of harmony.

My first tech business was successful Because of our long working hours culture We were proud of it. A small band that out worked the competition Or so I thought Until I was proven wrong When I got ill, and had some time to reflect And I started to see the negative impact it was having We switched to a different way of working, and scaled more effectively We made long hours the exception, not the rule We talked opening about flexible practice and the benefits we personally gained I started visibility exiting, sometimes even getting changed for where I was going. Other senior team members did the same. Implicit permission that hobbies and family were important We got people to think about when they sent emails, and how we role modelled disconnection And we encouraged greater flexibility in the quieter periods (even thought they weren’t exactly quiet) The result? Every metric we measured, apart from 1 lesser KPI, had improved 12 months later. I thought the long working hours culture was what made us successful. I was wrong. It was when we saved the hard work for when we needed it, that we saw the negative impact it was having On our trust, our delegation, our health and our sustained performance And that is a lesson that I still carry with me today. Especially given how much of an barrier long working hours culture is to advancing gender equity There’s nothing quite as powerful as prioritising human sustainability and making work a net positive for everyone. (And on a personal note, just arrived in Tenerife for a week with the not so little ones, so I’ll be in the sun and not on here!)

How to transition from work-life balance to work-life integration Each case is unique, but there are some guidelines that can help in this transition. Work-life integration isn’t for everyone It sounds limiting, but it’s reality. Some tasks cannot be performed at home or at times other than those required by the contract, due to their specificity. It’s necessary to ‘study’ employees What are the real needs of employees? There are those who would prefer to activate hybrid work, those who would like to have a company canteen and those who would need a babysitting service. The possibilities are countless and only by means of an internal survey is it possible to highlight them in order to define priorities. SMART goals are needed When work doesn’t have a defined timetable, it’s necessary to set Specific, Measurable, Accepted, Realistic, Timely It will be the person’s responsability to achieve them, focusing on productivity and not on working hours. Trust between people is crucial Team members (and the company as a whole) must trust each other to avoid conflicts or recriminations. You’ll find some tips on this issue in the following article. Well, there’s not a single straight answer to this question. The work-life balance in tech in the USA depends on various factors! [1] Company Culture Matters: While the global nature of tech work can lead to longer hours, some companies prioritize work-life balance. Look for organizations with established policies and leadership that promote healthy boundaries. [2] Pressure and Deadlines: Meeting deadlines, innovating, and keeping up with industry advancements are exciting aspects of tech careers, but they can also lead to feeling constantly "on the clock." This pressure can make disconnecting after work difficult. [3] Availability Expectations: Some companies have an expectation of round-the-clock availability. This, coupled with a competitive environment, can significantly impact work-life balance. The Bottom Line: Finding a balance between work and personal life in tech is achievable. However, it requires careful consideration of company culture, workload expectations, and personal priorities. The work-life balance fairly depends upon you and your choices in reality.
