Did you know that the Front Range region generates more than an estimated 85% of Colorado's landfilled waste? This means the Front Range region also holds the key to increasing waste reduction and recycling activities that will enable Colorado to achieve it's ambitious statewide goals of 35% waste diversion by 2026 and 45% by 2036 (note that the Front Range region's goals are to achieve 39% waste diversion by 2026 and 51% waste diversion by 2036). As of 2022 data, Colorado's waste diversion rate is 15.8% or just under half the national waste diversion rate of 32%. At Nine Zero, we’re all about minimising waste! As part of this, we partner with farms close to our Cornwall workshop, supplying them with our timber waste to be repurposed for animal bedding and composting. This not only aids in reducing landfill contributions but also supports the local agricultural community in Southwest England. It’s also important to us to share our story and showcase how industrial waste can be transformed into valuable resources, which we hope encourages other eco-conscious businesses to assess and reduce their own environmental footprint. At Altria, one of our Responsibility Focus Areas is Protect the Environment, which includes conserving the natural resources on which our businesses and communities rely. Altria's companies implement waste management programs at our offices and production facilities to manage business waste, production waste, chemical waste and solid waste. We’re pleased to report that in 2022 we exceeded our 2030 target to reduce our waste to landfill by 25%. One of the ways we’ve achieved this target is through the recycling of materials. We recently completed a roofing project and were able to recycle 95% of the material removed which saved over 250,000 pounds of waste from being disposed in a landfill. ♻️ Northumberland County has successfully negotiated a contract with Circular Materials Ontario (CMO), to extend our blue box pickup program until the end of 2025! This strategic move aligns with the province-wide transition to full 'Producer Responsibility' for the recycling system by 2026. 🔄 🔗 Under the contract terms, Northumberland County will continue administering the recycling collection program during this transition period, ensuring the seamless provision of curbside and deposit collections for the Blue Box program on behalf of CMO. The sale of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has also been completed as part of the move to new regulations introduced by the province. Northumberland County's Blue Box collection program has played a crucial role in the County’s waste management efforts. Although not currently on track to hit the 80% National Waste Target by 2030, with concerted action Tasmania could do it. Basically, Tas needs to lift its current #recycling rate from the predicted 500kt in 2030 (natural growth in recycling) to 850 kt in 2030. Some key #WasteReform actions that can help Tas get past the line include: o Higher #landfill charges to drive source separation (usually via a #landfilllevy); o #Grants for #infrastructure to sort mixed #waste; o Mandatory #FOGO for households; o Mandatory Commercial Food (#COFO) collection and diversion from landfill; o PS schemes being applied to specific waste streams.
