📚 It never ceases to amaze me how our body works and what it is capable of. This is again true for our immune system, about which I learned in the fascinating book 'An Elegant Defense: The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System' by Matt Richtel. It's fascinating how complex it is, how much we've discovered about it byt at the same time how much we still don't know. 💤 Moreover, the book delves into the intricate balance our immune system maintains, even risking potential cancer to prioritize immediate tissue repair. As Richtel puts it, "It is willing, in the short term, to risk a mutation taking hold in order to allow for the immediate rebuilding of tissue." In addition to this, it's also interesting how everything we do is interconnected and somehow a lot goes back to a few basic things - sleep, excercise and nutrition. 💡 Did you know that sleep plays a crucial role in our immune system's function? According to Richtel, "The effect of sleep on the immune system is the critical link that’s driving the risks." 🍏 So again we have to distinguish between life-span and health-span.
