Animal use in science is not just an animal welfare issue. For the most past, the animal use model does not translate into cures and treatments for humans. Animals are harmed. The animal care workers are harmed and the outcomes are not curing diseases in the way we have believed them to be. With compassion and innovation, Canada could be a leader in change, but we can't advocate for a solution without knowing there's a problem. In 2020, when Covid was at it's full peak, our family (after more than 3 years of pleading by the kids) took a momentous decision. We adopted a dog. Not a breed dog but a stray Indie puppy that had lost its mother to a road accident and siblings to other stray dogs. Our Friends and relatives commented on our noble deed. But here is the thing - It has been more than 4 years since Binkle has been with us, and all of us realise that he has given our family more than what we have done for him. I am not saying that every one should adopt a stray animal but our behaviour towards animals actually are a lead indicator of our personality. I am sure you would have seen people pelting stones , or hitting stray animals , not just with an intent to fend them off but more with an intent to hurt them or tease them. They are bullies , and my hypothesis is that their real nature emerges whenever they are in a position of power or dominance. And as they say , what goes around comes around. So on Animal Welfare day , let us at least take a stance not to tease and hurt animals , because actually their welfare is our welfare.
