When I was walking, I found someone dead on the roadside. This made me realize that life is fleeting or transient. When you learn about what happens to the body after death, it's called 'Taphonomy'. Being a Forensic Anthropology learner, I find it fascinating to study the changes our bodies undergo after death. The same thought struck me when I was walking, and the pictures below capture that moment. 📸 "A picture speaks a thousand words."👀 However, if you have any questions or something you'd like to share with me, feel free to write here. DECOMPOSITION SCORE The Decomposition Score (DS) serves as a method for evaluating the extent of decomposition in human remains. This scoring system typically involves assessing various observable changes in the body, such as alterations in color, odor, insect activity, and tissue consistency. Scores are assigned to these changes, allowing for an estimation of the stage of decomposition and, in some cases, the postmortem interval (PMI). The specific criteria and scoring methods of a decomposition scoring system can vary depending on the methodology employed and the expertise of the examiner. Some scales, like the one proposed by Megyesi et al. in 2005, categorize decomposition into stages and assign scores accordingly to different regions of the body, such as the head and neck, torso, and limbs. These scores are the total body scores. Additionally, some studies have utilized the "rule of nine," a scale originally developed for assessing the degree of burns, as a tool for quantifying the degree of decomposition. Do check the referred articles and comment if you have come across any other methodologies to find out the extent of decomposition that the body has undergone. The impact of rain, fly maggots, and foxes on the decomposition of carcasses in Switzerland 🔎 🦊 Environmental conditions influence the decomposition process of a body and thus the determination of the time of death. An international study led by Lara Indra from the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Universität Bern investigated the process of decomposition on pig carcasses left in nature in Switzerland and provided valuable data for forensic analysis. ▶ More details on the study in the University of Bern’s media release: https://lnkd.in/eEfskWxH #forensicanthropology #anthropology #forensicscience
