In the whirlwind of our professional lives, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks, deadlines, and meetings. As an HR professional, I often find myself immersed in the intricacies of policies, procedures, and processes, sometimes losing sight of the bigger picture. It took a simple yet profound observation from my 5 year-old daughter to remind me of the true essence of my work: helping people. As HR professionals, it's easy to lose sight of this fundamental purpose, especially when we're inundated with emails, meetings, and deadlines. But my daughter's words serve as a powerful reminder: helping people should be the focal point of HR. It's not just about managing employees; it's about empowering them, supporting them, and advocating for their well-being. Whether it's assisting an employee in navigating a challenging situation, providing resources for professional growth, or simply lending a compassionate ear, every interaction is an opportunity to make a difference. In the midst of hectic schedules and competing priorities, it's crucial to pause and reconnect with the heart of our profession. It's about fostering human connections, building trust, and fostering a sense of community within the workplace. When we prioritize helping people, we create environments where employees feel valued, respected, and supported—a crucial foundation for organizational success. As HR professionals, we have the privilege and responsibility of shaping workplace culture, promoting diversity and inclusion, and championing employee well-being. By embracing the ethos of helping people, we can elevate our profession and truly make a difference in the lives of those we serve. So, the next time we find ourselves overwhelmed by the demands of our roles, let's remember the wisdom of my 5 year-old daughter. Let's refocus our efforts on what truly matters: helping people. In doing so, we not only honor the essence of our profession but also create workplaces that are more humane, compassionate, and fulfilling for all. After all, isn't that what it's all about? P.S. Research on candidate behavior indicates that candidates are interested in your company's reputation. While it can be tempting to dismiss lists like these, the reality is that as an employer these impact your ability to attract and hire talent. While many predicted major swings in employment in 2023, many of those fears were simply unfounded. Unemployment stayed near record levels and employees maintained their leverage. So if you didn't do anything proactive in 2023, perhaps now is the time to get started on updating your messaging, your EVP, your content, your strategy, your recruiting channels, and your tech to make sure you are attracting the right people for your company to be successful this year and beyond.

I did another interview this past week in which I espoused my newly held beliefs that: 1. We shouldn’t bring our whole authentic selves to work, as most work cultures don’t do enough to protect or deserve that whole self 2. As median job tenure drops, the average stay at a job will soon be 2-3yrs so rah-rah ‘family’ cultures expecting fealty are kidding themselves and instead they need to look at employment as transactional. 3. It’s been transactional for most employers all along but they took advantage of employees by guilting them with the ‘family’ 💩- now it will have to be transactional in both directions as 3yrs isn’t enough time to inculcate the rah-rah. Further, most people don’t want the rah-rah. Why don’t they? 4. The Swiftie effect - meaning there are deeper sinews of social connectivity that will beat work every time, and they are easy to find and build in a hyper social age. Are you a Swiftie and a Googler? Dollars to donuts you’ll lay down in front of a train quicker for another Swiftie than another Googler. The notion of liking and bonding with people just because you get your paycheck from the same place will eventually be seen as archaic. 5. With this shift means work cultures become consumables and employers should seek to build a type of brand loyalty similar to other 2-3yr long consumables rather than a ‘we’re family’ kind of cultural fealty (e.g. “I loved leasing my Lexus but now with kids I am enjoying my Subaru. I may go back to the Lexus in a few years but only if the deal is good. Otherwise I may try a Prius.” But instead substitute company names in that sentence.) So if that’s the new world, what’s that mean for HR? Does HR actually now become an ‘employee marketing and branding’ team augmented by IT to manage the human widgets and legal to deal with the sex pests? 🤔 Good article here that doesn’t really answer any questions but poses some interesting ones.
