🚧 We should stop hiring for frameworks and languages. 🚧 The three best frontend engineers I hired had zero past experience with the frontend frameworks we used. The team that helped quickly and safely move the most critical and complicated part of our product to Go-based microservices had no previous experience with Go. We built a few native mobile apps with engineers who didn't have previous experience building mobile apps. We perfectly maintained the GCP-based product with the help of engineers who only had AWS experience in the past. It takes days or weeks for a great engineer to start delivering great results with the tools they have zero experience with. It takes years, if at all possible, for a mediocre engineer to start providing great results, no matter how much experience they have with the tools. Learning tools is easy. Learning engineering is hard.

The truth is that they will start hiring software engineers that know how to work faster with AIs. The reason why we build machines is because we humans make mistakes, that’s why we build machines programmed to make lesser mistakes. The next set of software engineers that will matter are the ones who have adapted to working with AIs. It’s going to happen soon! Change is the most constant thing in life! You either adapt or fall out. It boils down to you at the end of the day.

Hiring a developer isn’t just about Checking off skills on a resume—it’s about finding the perfect fit for your company’s culture, vision, and tech stack. Start with the basics, but go deeper: Ask them to solve a live coding challenge using the frameworks or languages your team uses (e.g., React for frontend, Ruby on Rails for backend). Focus on their code structure and logic, not just getting the right answer. Do they use clean, readable code? Do they follow best practices like DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself) and SOLID principles? Real-World Scenarios Present a scenario you’ve faced, like scaling a database or improving API response time. Watch how they approach the problem Do they suggest a scalable and performance-focused solution? Go beyond coding and dive into system architecture: Ask them to design a system or a feature, like a real-time chat app or a recommendation engine. Look for their understanding of databases (SQL vs. NoSQL), load balancing, caching, and microservices. This shows whether they can build systems that can grow with your company. Debugging Challenge Provide a broken code snippet or a buggy API. See how they debug? Version Control Knowledge Ask about their experience with Git/GitHub. How they handle branching strategies (e.g., GitFlow). Communication Skills Technical skills matter, but can they explain their thought process? Ask them to explain a complex project as if they were talking to a non-technical colleague. Problem-Solving Mindset Present a tough, open-ended problem like scaling infrastructure for millions of users. Do they consider security, scalability, and cost? Your scale-up won’t grow because you only have programmers. Programmers are not software engineers. Software engineers don’t program computers. They write stories about how things move and change. Stories that computers understand. And more importantly, stories that other software engineers understand. If that second component is missing, your software product will die and rot, rather sooner than later. Having onboard someone who understands this is obviously lifesaving for a business. But if there’s no one like that in the team, hiring a consultant is a valid way of saving your money and your business in the long run.

If you're hiring a Software Engineer permanently... it's cut-throat out there. Skills are in such high demand that you've got to do something ridiculous to: a) get them b) retain them It's not sustainable. Hiring contractors is the way forward.
