It's a weird feeling, building software without any understanding of usage... Engineers are often separated from users. We often operate blind. We don't understand the people that use our software. We don't understand their challenges, their fears. We don't understand their context. 90% of the teams I've worked in are like this. My solution? Observability. Once you fully understand exactly how your app is operating in production, it changes the game. I've helped teams go from operating blind to decent visibility many times. And every time it amazes me what comes out of the woodwork. The team starts to understand how the app *actually* works... ...instead of not how they *want* it to work. The amount of optimistic thinking in engineering blows my tiny mind! And high levels of Observability is the tool that brings us back to reality. "Oh... that's weird..." "Why is the app redirecting them 6 times? What the heck?" "Oh! That's why they're getting a timeout. Kind of obvious when you think about it!" The key to observability: 1. Implement Open Telemetry - be able to move between New Relic, Datadog, Honeycomb and other providers 2. Focus on traces - traces are more powerful than logs and metrics. Fact is logs are essential too 3. Record domain objects - I'll be writing a lot more about this soon, but we should be attaching details of domain objects to every trace - their ID, their attributes and it should be namespaced ✍️ If you have questions about observability in your apps ♻️ If you found this useful

Ease of use is everything.

Low-code/no-code tools aren't just liberating for business users. They also liberate IT. But I think this benefit tends to get overlooked - and it shouldn't. There just aren't enough tech and data professionals to go around, and so tech teams tend to be very selective about what user stories they put on their backlog. If it isn't related to a strategic priority or otherwise have far reaching impact, chances are your request isn't going anywhere. This leaves business in a bind. Tech's triage is hard to argue with, but we have a business to run, and there are often big gains to be had outside of these strategic initiatives. This is where citizen development can help. The business can now help itself with little to no involvement from IT. We can solve a lot of the problems that IT doesn't want to address on our own. We free ourselves from what can be a high barrier to entry - and we free IT from having to do work that isn't really worth their time. #citizendevelopment #lowcode #nocode #analytics
