Lonely- Critical - Connection - words we hear very often these days. What I've learned through the process of multiple placemaking initiatives is that public space is sometimes the antithesis of public space. Partnerships are sometimes not aligned, creating more space for "I'd never go there" because you don't feel welcome- or safe - or maybe you know you're taking part in something that quickly became unregulated gentrification. What I've also learned and strive to articulate is the power behind public placemaking when communities do it with the municipality supporting them - no matter how big or small, it's transformative. When activated intentionally, it is somewhere people are reborn, find refuge, or can convey/respond authentically to others around them they may not know. It's a place for multi-faceted artists to bring their messages and speak freely about the social changes we can create worldwide. #loneliness #mentalhealth #placemaking #workforcedevelopment #artists #socialchange #strategy #collaboration #publicspace #communityengagement

Here are some questions that we will be exploring in the coming months: - How can we ensure that our local neighborhood networks provide safe, adaptive, and resilient play spaces in the face of climate extremes? - How can we retrofit and adapt existing play spaces, yards, and green areas to rise to the challenges posed by extreme heat, flooding, and poor air quality? - Should we develop temporary alternatives to outdoor play to ensure the health and mental well-being of children and families during extreme weather? - And finally, what inspiration can we draw from places around the globe that have navigated similar extreme conditions to cultivate spaces of care, caregiving, and play for their communities? Kudos to all the work being done to get visitors to return to Downtown Pittsburgh! A new report shows Downtown Pittsburgh achieved a higher percentage of returning visitors last year than nearly every city in the country except for three: 1. Minneapolis: 45.3% 2. Chicago: 35.5% 3. As an academic interested in communication between local governments and their residents (and general fan of bikes), I'm digging this project website for the "Campus to Commons" shared-used trail that Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) is planning. It's a good example of public communication by a local government with the intent of informing and inviting community input and engagement early on to improve project success. In addition, I think inviting folks to join an in-person feedback tour (likely by bus at this point) to see the route in real-time and under current conditions would be valuable too. This project sounds like a great addition for folks in that part of Northeast Lexington. Similarly, I look forward to the future Coldstream industrial development plan that will provide an easier and safer connection to the Legacy Trail from my neighborhood. The Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization deserves a shout out too for their website. It has some highly visual and interactive maps detailing current and future projects for community members to explore. Seeing is believing and engaging content like this not only helps present project ideas and progress clearly but it also illustrates (literally) the important and challenging work of local planning. https://lnkd.in/ggB6maha

One of the valuable components of the College of Arts and Sciences at St. Thomas is the community research partnerships we have. The CAS connects faculty and students with community partners to research, provide resources and take learning outside the classroom. These nimble partnerships are fueled by creativity, grounded in our values and informed by data. Together, we rise to the needs of our community to solve problems for the common good. One example of research in action is the urban art mapping project. Urban Art Mapping seeks to document and analyze street art responding to moments of friction and crisis. Currently, they are exploring topics including systemic racism, the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental challenges and gentrification. Their ultimate goal is to arrive at a nuanced understanding of the relationship between street art and place, considering how art shaped and is shaped by unique neighborhoods.
