The Early Learning Manager is a new position created to help the PBS Wisconsin Education team scale early learning programs that combine the strengths of our successful work activating national Ready to Learn resources from PBS KIDS with statewide early learning initiatives and priorities through train-the-trainer models developed by our talented team. The ideal candidate is experienced in managing and scaling projects with ambitious goals. They also have experience supervising high-performing staff to create professional learning experiences that meet the needs of caring adults working with early learners (early childhood educators, childcare providers, early learning programs, parents and caregivers, librarians, and multi-generational family units), especially in high-need and under-resourced communities. EARLY LEARNING MATTERS WEEK: SUPPORTING THE FUTURE AND QUALITY OF THE EARLY CHILDHOOD SECTOR IN AUSTRALIA Research consistently shows that the first five years of life are critical for brain development. During this period, a child’s brain is more adaptable and responsive to learning than at any other stage of life. High-quality Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) fosters a child’s cognitive, emotional and social development during this crucial stage. The Putting A Value on Early Childhood Education and Care in Australia report found that children who participate in quality early education and care are more likely to do well in school and have better health and wellbeing outcomes throughout their lives. Given the lifetime benefits of quality ECEC and the resulting economic benefits for society - including increased productivity and a reduction in social costs – more needs to be done to safeguard the future of our often-undervalued sector. The important word here is quality. Ultimately, the key to providing a high-quality early learning environment that offers children the best start in life is the professionalism of the early childhood teachers, educators and team. But there is more to be done to ensure that as a sector, we build a highly skilled, professionally recognised and therefore sustainable workforce. The Federal Government has committed to providing funding towards wage increases for Early Childhood Educators. This is a great start, and we hope it is a meaningful increase that sufficiently reflects the value of our educators. The way we speak about our sector is also important, in order to ensure a better understanding of the importance of ECEC. As Early Childhood Australia says, "Many words used to talk about Early Childhood Education & Care have a long history of being used to diminish the importance of what educators do. When people talk about ‘child care’ or ‘looking after little kids’, they reinforce outdated views that undervalue the sector.” At Explore & Develop there is an important distinction in the words that we use: Early Childhood Education and Care (not Childcare or Daycare) Educator or Teacher (not childcare worker) Service (not Centre) Sector or profession (not Industry) Ensuring our sector is properly valued requires a multi-faceted approach, including better awareness of the benefits of early learning, increased funding and compensation for educators, and policy reforms that sufficiently reflect the long-term value of investing in early childhood development. The Symbiotic Bond between Adult Education and Early Childhood Education. People ask me all the time, why the crossover from Adult Education into Early Childhood Education? In the realm of education, there exists a symbiotic relationship between Adult Education and Early Childhood Education, each influencing and benefiting from the other in profound ways. This interdependence underscores the holistic nature of education and the necessity of recognising the seamless continuum from adult learners to young children. At first glance, Adult Education and Early Childhood Education may seem worlds apart, catering to vastly different demographics with distinct learning needs. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that they are intrinsically linked, with each domain serving as both a precursor and a product of the other. Adult Education often serves as a bridge for individuals who have not had access to quality early childhood education. It offers second chances, equipping learners with the foundational skills necessary to succeed in further education, employment, and society at large. In this sense, adult education acts as a corrective force, addressing the gaps left by inadequate early childhood experiences. Conversely, the effectiveness of Early Childhood Education programmes are greatly enhanced when parents and caregivers are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to support their children's learning and development. Adult education, therefore, plays a crucial role in empowering parents to become active participants in their children's educational journey, thereby creating a more conducive environment for early learning.Moreover, the principles and methodologies employed in both Adult Education and Early Childhood Education often intersect. For instance, both emphasise the importance of experiential learning, learner-centered approaches, and the recognition of individual differences. As such, educators in both domains stand to benefit from cross-pollination, drawing inspiration and insights from each other's practices. Furthermore, societal challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and inequity are best addressed through a multi-generational approach that encompasses both Adult and Early Childhood Education. By breaking the cycle of disadvantage at both ends of the age spectrum, communities can foster upward mobility and create a more equitable society. Ultimately, the crossover from Adult Education to Early Childhood Education underscores the interconnectedness of learning across the lifespan. Just as a tree's roots nourish its branches, so too do adult learners enrich the educational landscape for young children, and vice versa.
