After 3 challenging, enlightening and foundational years I am thrilled to announce my graduation with Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing and Management Science Cum Laude at the IMM Graduate School. 🎓 When I completed matric, I remember my dad telling me I needed to find a little admin job because I certainly wasn’t going to be sitting at home doing nothing until varsity started. What followed was the start of my journey at Paintmaster SA PTY (Ltd) as an admin assistant. The time flew by, and before I knew it, varsity was around the corner. The initial plan was always to study, study hard and complete my degree. After getting a little taste of the working world. I thought, hang on… I’m digging this new independent working woman! How can I make them both work? So it started. Office work by day, night shift hitting the books at night. I look back at it now, and wonder how on earth I did it? I came to the realisation that once you get into a routine, it becomes easy. Having a routine, and being disciplined enough to stick to it. Is one of the key lessons I have learnt these last 3 years. Now, 3 years later as the Marketing Manager at PaintMaster SA. I am proud to look back at my journey, and the growth I’ve been fortunate enough to experience. The late nights were providing me with knowledge, I got to apply to my work the next day. It has given me so much insight and value in the early years of my career. I'm hardly using what I learnt at school or college. Constant switching between too many subjects and the fear of being tested frequently kept me stressed. So, it became normal to - - Lose track of what was learnt in each subject - Focus on managing 'what needs to be finished' rather than 'what have I understood' - Lack depth in any one area - Feel overwhelmed, confused and stressed, even as a young school goer To develop a point of view, it's important to let a student do 2-3 subjects at a time for a period of a few weeks. That allows a sense of authority on what was studied and helps them understand how to apply what was learnt. It's also how we choose what we are really interested in and make a profession out of it. Monday mind burp... Reflecting on my visit to New Designers last Thursday, it struck me quite how much now rides on the choice of major project at the start of each student's final year. LI is now full of posts from chuffed graduates celebrating (rightfully) their award wins and recognition, but much like many award wins in industry, the winners projects are somewhat predictable....in the sense that the awarding institution tends to highlight student work that reflects their own brand portfolio or market inhabitance. Homeware brands typically award prizes to students who have tackled homeware projects. The same goes for medical, toys, consulting... I have no issue with the students who win these awards. They are worthy winners, but I feel somewhat sorry for the students who tackle projects that don't fit into these categories. The stuff that is tricky or knotty and feels slightly unresolved because it is tricky or knotty. Complicated stuff that isn't neat. Stuff that doesn't look great in a press release. Loose ends. Scrappy prototypes. It also means that there tends to be a somewhat cyclical pattern to major projects. Stuff that does well. Stuff about the size of a football (or smaller) that can sit on a plinth and present itself as resolved and beautiful. Stuff people can wrap their heads around in a few minutes without needing to dig deeper. Don't get me wrong. That's what I advise 4th year students to do, because I know how the system works and how people get noticed. That doesn't make it right. It's no reflection on the students. They are doing what they know will get the best marks. It's more a reflection of the industry rewarding predictability, and institutions pushing students to do stuff that they know will do well. Ultimately you end up with a form of homogeneity I guess... Who knows...just an observation...

“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master” Ernest Hemingway   Uplifting group of extraordinary humans came together to agree the problem statement that is #EquitableSafety.   Each one with their own experiences, voice and passion for changing the status quo.   Each one curious enough to not only talk but also listen to others who experience a culture that is broken.   Honest enough to admit the challenge is enormous and unforgiving.   Passionate enough to not only share their own amazing drive and action but to actively seek more.   Its exciting, you could feel the buzz of hope, determination, and pure grit to do better.   The painful truth is we do not know what we don’t know; about how wrong current design methodology is; creating inequitable safety in build, maintenance, operation and use.   Yet each of us experience it in our own way.   Be it a fire door that is too heavy Signage that makes no sense Instructions that are not audible Tools that our hands can’t grip Drawings that have more clouds than clarity Training that confuses not illuminates Welfare that neglects our full personal needs Risk assessments that don’t notice we are not the ’mythical’ average   In many ways we feel it in our gut, day after day, until we ignore the signs of a world that is not designed for us, and forget to speak it, so that designers within our check, do plan, review, can learn and change to create a more systematically safe and equitable design.   An industry that designs for the workforce it so desperately needs, has a chance at survival.   To do this we need you, all our lovely combined networks, we need a full and true ground swell.   So watch out for more calls to action from this ‘disruptive band’ (or even join it), for if we share our own ask and grow those cogs, if we ask others what they need and collectively support amplify those cogs, if we share so we know where the overlaps and gaps are, we may, just may shift the dial. 💜 #SafetyInDesign #Infrastructure #ThinkDifferently #SafetyCulture #HumanCentredDesign #Construction #Buildability #CDM2015 #DoingIsTheChallenge #BetterOutcomes Image description in alt text. WHAT TALENTS STUDENTS SHOULD DEVELOP A friend and mentor of mine, Sid Chadwick, recently shared this bit of insight with me. I am passing it on so my students and colleagues can benefit. Critical Talents Students Seldom Develop – Before Needed As part of an ACCGC (Accrediting Council for Collegiate Graphic Communications) Board and Site Audit Team (for three three-year terms), I was privileged to visit a different Graphic Communication school - every year to conduct an onsite academic audit. On the last day of our visit, we usually had time specifically set aside to meet with volunteered Juniors and Seniors to hear from them, in a closed discussion, simplistically, “What are you learning from your studies and this program?” I remember one smart young lady asking us, “What should we be studying and developing that our Advisors have probably not recommended?” After my two academic Audit Teammates responded, I offered (representing a noticeably different perspective): You most likely will be hired much because of your technical knowledge, and hopefully, somewhat, for evidence re. your work ethic and social skills. Those personal qualities can significantly affect the hiring process, as evidenced by your academic record and Internships. However, it is your ability to communicate with your associates with your audience, to effectively listen (to hear what is said and almost said), to ask smart questions, and to create understandings of important ideas - that I believe ultimately determine your professional level of contribution and achievement – that make you invaluable.
