My name is Michael (Hi Michael) and I am a recovering consultant. At the first place I worked post college, the president of the company would hold monthly staff meetings. I can remember him talking a lot about his passion for Civil Engineering, I can distinctly remember one occasion where he jumped on the table in excitement just talking about a project. 21 year old me looks at my buddy sitting next to me and says, I must be doing something wrong because I don’t have a passion for anything like that. I had passion for the Cubs, the Packers, and of course the Kentucky Wildcats, but a passion for engineering? Nope. I honestly don’t know why I even went into engineering. I was good at math and science, and my rural high school was known for producing good engineers, so that is what I did. Four years of college and boom I am an engineer. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed working on projects and being a problem solver, but even after several years, would I call it a passion? Nope. I enjoyed telling my family I designed this road or this parking lot, or helped this community with their water and sewer, but honestly it was just a job. I had more of a passion proving the critics and neigh-sayers wrong. It probably wasn’t until recently that I actually could relate to the guy I was talking about earlier in my post. Did you know that at least 930,000 people in US cities lack sustained access to basic sanitation and at least 610,000 people to basic water access? I am not talking about a third world country here, I am talking about the United States. I can remember watching Superstorm Sandy hit the northeast back in 2012. The first few days went ok, but at about the third day, without basic services, things got pretty crazy. You can generally survive awhile without power, but just a few days of not being able to turn on the tap or flush your toilet is unlivable. I say all this because if you don’t currently have a passion for what you do, it may come, or it may not. Give it a chance and you may be surprised. Focus on something everyday that you believe makes a positive impact on your surroundings and be proud of that. I have a passion for improving the lives of the communities in which we work and live. I don’t believe I will jump on a desk anytime soon and proclaim it, but who knows. About 30% of America’s roads are in poor condition. Much of the interstate highway system is built on foundations 50-60 years old. To visualize the severity of this problem, you can look at Texas Department of Transportation. If you took every lane mile owned by TXDOT alone, you could drive around the earth’s circumference 8x, not including city streets or county roads. That’s just one of 50 states (albeit one of the largest). Why should you care? Well, to be frank, we don’t have the workforce to do this in a timely manner. Here how YOU can help: • Infrastructure Companies — pay well, create a culture that empowers people young and old, and provide them with a career path. • Construction Workers — seek purpose in your work. What you do is damn important and the work you do matters greatly to the success of society. • Everyone Else — Construction is a ridiculously noble career. The ball is in your court to help change society’s view of blue collar work. Check your bias, respect the people who make your infrastructure possible, and speak up next time you hear someone bashing Blue Collar humans. Who knows? Maybe a career in construction is where you’ll find your passion and purpose.
