It aint over till it’s over !!!
In Nov. '17, I was nominated for the Chairman’s Individual Award in the "Exceptional Contributor " category. The day of the Award function, I had to attend the UltraTech Achievers Award at ITC Grand Central, Parel, followed by interaction with the Chairman ( along with the other nominees), lunch, and then the Chairman’s Award function at NSCI, Worli, from 4 pm onwards. It would be challenging, time-wise, but I was confident I'd manage with a little planning.
As it turns out, nothing went according to plan that day. But I learned some invaluable lessons that I'd like to share with you.
After the interaction with the Chairman, as we proceeded to lunch, my driver called to inform me that he'd left my car (despite my stern instructions not to do so) for a while, and in his absence, it had been towed.
Forgetting lunch( although I was famished), I somehow reached the police station, completed the formalities, paid a penalty, and got my car back.
Lesson 1 : No matter how clear you believe you've been in your instructions/ communication, the final outcome depends on how the message is received and executed.
Relieved at getting the car back, thinking the worst was over, I rushed home, showered and changed at warp speed, and came downstairs to find my driver had run off.
Lesson 2: Overcoming one obstacle doesn't mean much, unfortunately -- you have to actually cross the finish line to win the race. Don't get lulled into false security.
I booked an Uber which arrived promptly, but it was filthy, both inside and out. As my wife and I settled in for an uncomfortable ride, I hummed, "All is well" from 3 Idiots, to cheer us up.
In the middle of the Bandra-Worli Sealink, the cab broke down. I flagged down a passing black and yellow taxi.
Sweaty and disheveled, a little shaken, we arrived at the venue, and settled into our seats. As the function progressed and the names were called out, my heart slowly sank. Two nominees from my category had already won. I knew from my experience as an former Awards Committee member, that ever since it had been instituted, there had been only one winner in that category; two winners was extremely unusual. I realized I had missed my chance this time around.
As I steeled myself for disappointment, I heard my name being announced; I was the third and final winner in the category.
On unsteady legs, I reached the stage and received my Award from the Chairman.
As I walked back to my seat, I pondered on the final lesson of the day,
Lesson 3: Don't give up, don't lose hope, coz baby, it aint over till it's over.😊
