Tesla is taking new steps to reign in costs while the company redirects its focus to #ai and #autonomy. New team lead for the 4680 #battery Bonne Eggleston has set a goal of lowering production cost of the cylindrical cells below that of #oemsuppliers #panasonic or #lges . Key to achieving that goal will be abandoning the dry coating process and outsourcing cathodes when needed. This is another significant departure from #tesla ‘s previous strategy of controlling costs by reinventing the #manufacturing process. The dry coating of the cathode eliminates the use of solvents and time spent drying, or curing the cathode layers prior to assembly. Tesla’s shift away from a focus on #electricvehicle assembly now includes the 4680 battery cell in addition to curtailing production advances with #gigapress technology and the Supercharging network being virtually eliminated. #automotiveindustry #ev #evs #automobilindustrie #batterymanufacturing #forecasting #autoforecastsolutions https://lnkd.in/ebtQYDM4

Tesla might have figured out longer-lasting manganese-rich batteries Tesla might have figured out how to make manganese-rich battery cells last longer with doped cathode active material. Manganese-rich cathode active materials such as LiMn2O4 have long been considered an interesting option for their low cost, high voltage, and relatively low environmental impact, but they haven’t been seriously considered for electric vehicles due to a https://lnkd.in/gYENEUGN

Are the larger (eg 4680) cylindrical cells more likely to get sidewall dents? Tesla are replacing some Cybertruck battery packs and this was one reason: "some cells may have side dents, which can cause shorting in cells in packs" https://lnkd.in/erSgDCGF We have also noted that the can thickness of the Tesla 4680 cell has been reduced from 0.5 to 0.6mm in Gen 1 cells https://lnkd.in/eW4NhszM to 0.35mm in Gen 2 cells https://lnkd.in/eJ_8ebSY What is really happening here? Is it an issue in pack production, cell production or fundamental cell design? It would be great to understand this and to use that to benefit all of the other 46xx design work. Perhaps we can reduce some of the scrap and waste. #batteries #batterydesign #batterycells

The #world’s #biggest #battery maker says Elon Musk’s #4680 #cell ‘is going to #fail’ / The chairman of CATL isn't a believer in Elon's cylindrical battery quest. https://lnkd.in/gXy-x4aV 🔹️ #RobinZeng, the founder of the world’s largest #EV battery company, says #Tesla #CEO #ElonMusk’s big bet on 4680 cylindrical cell technology “is going to fail and never be successful.” Zeng, the chairman of #China’s #Contemporary #Amperex #Technology (#CATL), tells Reuters that when Musk visited China in April, “We had a very big debate, and I showed him. He was silent. He doesn’t know how to make a battery.” 🔹️ Tesla’s “tabless” 4680 cells, which are used in some of its cars, including the Cybertruck, are supposed to have “five times” more energy capacity, and the company announced in September it had produced 100 million of them. A recent report by The Information said Musk had given the team working on the batteries an end of the year deadline to deal with costs and other problems. | [By— Umar Shakir, a news writer fond of the electric vehicle lifestyle and things that plug in via USB-C. 🔋⚡Tesla’s 4680 Battery: Game-Changer or Doomed to Fail? 🔋⚡ The 4680 battery, a cornerstone of Tesla's innovation strategy, faces skepticism from an unexpected source: Robin Zeng, Chairman of China's battery titan CATL. During a meeting with Elon Musk, Zeng reportedly predicted the 4680's long-term failure, citing its limitations in electrochemistry compared to other advanced technologies. Zeng’s remarks challenge Tesla’s bold claims about the 4680’s potential for cost reduction and energy density improvements. While Musk excels in software, hardware, and mechanical innovations, Zeng implied that battery-making might not be Tesla’s strongest suit. But is Zeng right? Tesla’s focus on in-house battery production could still disrupt the industry—or expose its limits in the fiercely competitive EV market. What do you think? Could the 4680 battery redefine EV energy storage, or is it a misstep in Tesla’s ambitious roadmap? 🔗 Dive into the details : https://lnkd.in/eky4QMzZ #Tesla #4680Battery #EVRevolution 🚗🔋 #Innovation ⚙️ #CATL #Electrochemistry #EnergyStorage 🔌 #Sustainability 🌱
