The IFC recently participated in the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre Dialogue Session with the shipping industry, where we engaged key maritime stakeholders to discuss ongoing challenges and efforts to address Theft, Robbery and Piracy at Sea (TRAPS) incidents in the region. In early Oct, we released our quarterly infographic, with key observations and assessments on the TRAPS incidents in the Singapore Strait, along with recommended best practices. The data reflected a significant decrease in TRAPS incidents compared to last year, highlighting the positive effects of strengthened enforcement efforts and the vigilance of the industry. However, recent cases of successive incidents occurring within a single night serve as a reminder that threats remain. We strongly encouraged the shipping industry to remain vigilant and continue to implement security measures while operating in the areas of concern. Our collaboration with the Saudi Arabia Intelligence Unit on combating economic crimes exemplifies a robust international partnership dedicated to safeguarding global financial systems. Leveraging their expertise in intelligence gathering and our joint commitment to transparency, we have implemented comprehensive information-sharing protocols and conducted joint investigations that have successfully dismantled international money laundering operations. This collaboration not only enhances our respective capacities but also underscores the shared responsibility of nations in addressing transnational financial threats. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our partnership to include cybersecurity initiatives and further strengthen our collective ability to combat evolving forms of economic crime.

Shipowners have been warned about a “worrying” resurgence in attacks from Somali pirates, with five incidents recorded in Q1 2024 following zero in both the first quarter of 2023 and 2022. According to statistics tracked by the ICC’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB), 33 piracy and armed robbery incidents against ships were recorded in the first three months of 2024, up from 27 in the same period last year.
