The internet protocol version jumped from 4 to 6, "Why was IPv5 skipped?" IPv5 couldn't solve the real problem: the shortage of address space. IPv4's address space was depleted quickly, providing only 4.3 billion unique addresses. Since IPv5 also used 32-bit addressing, it never gained traction. Meanwhile, IPv6 promised nearly unlimited addresses. So, what happened to IPv5? It couldn't count past 32 bits and left the heavy lifting to its bigger sibling, IPv6! Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) predicted that 4.3 billion devices would occupy the IPv4, but later, 46 billion devices crossed the threshold. This makes the transition for IPv6. Initially, IPv4 ran out in 2011, followed by the same thing in 2014. IPv4: 32-bit address. 4.3 billion possible addresses. 💻 The Internet Society carried out a World IPv6 Launch day on June 6, 2012. However, 12 years later, IPv6 adoption rates are lower than anticipated. Why? 💬 Internet users and network admins are encountering various issues switching from IPv4 to IPv6, from high costs to network incompatibilities. 💡 Dual-stack networks have been adopted to facilitate the shift to IPv6, enabling devices and systems to seamlessly operate in both IPv4 and IPv6. These addresses are always present on an IPv6 interface, even if other address types are assigned. They play a critical role in IPv6 networks, supporting essential functions like neighbor discovery, automatic address configuration, and local communication, which are vital for the proper operation of an IPv6 network.

still on IP addresses One thing I have been curious about is how we never adopted a standard of ipv5 to sort ip addresses on the internet. it is common knowledge that an ipv4 network can support 2^32 hosts, just about 4.2 billion unique IP addresses, and moving higher IPv5 would have supported 2^64 hosts which would be about 18 quintillion possible addresses. (about a billion trillions). That would be a significant addition to the pool though. But anyway, opting for ipv6 as the new standard gives even more opportunities because that computes to 2^128, and that is A LOT of possible addresses. #ipaddressing #ipv6 #network
