“Don’t take your eye off your customers.” I was introduced to Seven Brothers restaurant for the first time earlier this year when our family went to Oahu, Hawaii. 🏝️ My daughter told us this was a required destination for us in Oahu. 🍔 If you’re not familiar with this restaurant, it was started in Oahu by Art & Peggy Hannemann who have 7 boys. They worked hard to instill good family values and a hard work ethic in their boys and decided to buy a hole-in-the-wall burger joint in Kahuku, Oahu in 2009. 🏄♂️ There are 33 other restaurant choices around their original restaurant, but of all these other places to eat, my daughter said this is the one we HAD to go to. (And we ended up going back multiple times while we were on the island.) Crazy enough, they told us while we were there in Hawaii that they were opening up a new location in Farmington, Utah of all places. So what makes Seven Brothers so special, when there are hundreds of other eating establishments to choose from? Well, we went to the new Farmington location last week and the food was awesome, just like it was in Hawaii. But something that really stood out was how attentive, friendly, and customer-centric the young employees were. No doubt this is a cultural thing at Seven Brothers. In a recent article in Utah Business, here’s what they had to say: —————— “Connecting with people can go a long way in this industry, and we choose to always keep that intact. We want to connect. We want you to feel the warmth and goodness in our restaurants. Hopefully, it feels like you’re at our house, where we serve you, clean your table and always ask what we can do for you. That’s the relationship we’re fostering.” —————— 💡 Lesson: If you treat your employees well, it sets the stage for them treating your customers well. If you want to read the full article I will share the link in the comments.

Three retail observations/experiences from the holiday week that stuck with me ... Two from outside grocery and one from a local supermarket. 1) The consumer education focus at Total Wine & More. My husband and I stopped in before the Fourth of July, and I immediately noticed the multiple sampling stations and detailed wine pairing posters. When we checked out, I asked the clerk if they did wine tastings and classes. Indeed they do — tastings are already available, and a classroom is in the works. (The location is a remodel.) I wasn't surprised at all because everything about the place screamed, "We are the experts. Anything you need or need to know, we are ready to deliver." It was impressive. 2) The experiential nature of shopping at Scheels. As you enter, you walk under and through an aquarium. Further through the entrance is a Ferris wheel. Upstairs, there are designated spaces to try out a softball bat, hone your golf swing, test a bowling ball and more. It's also one of the increasingly rare places where it's easy to find an associate to help you — and they're friendly and take the time to have real conversations. We went for fun and ended up spending money. 3) The enduring and underestimated value of customer service at Hy-Vee, Inc. I told the gentleman at the meat counter that I've been working on getting better at meal planning and meal prep and asked if I could call ahead sometime and get items cut and prepared for particular dishes, and he responded that they actually had those options ready to go already but that I'd certainly be welcome to call so they could get the whole order together in advance, too — "whatever is most convenient for you," he added. I have to give Hy-Vee a shout-out because I've had one excellent experience after another with their meat/seafood folks in particular. We shop multiple banners, but I talk to family, friends and fellow professionals about Hy-Vee an outsize amount, and customer service is the reason why. #freshproduce #grocery #retail #customerservice #shoppingexperience #customerexperience #training #consumereducation #customerloyalty #wordofmouthmarketing

Parades & frestvals promote community spirt & boost restaurants sales. Unfortunately there is no evidence they stimulate store sales, the event day will curb their business, frequently becoming their slowest day of the year. Looking for case studies of postive retail sales during festivals. Harbor Springs, Mich. July 4th celebration, my favorite. My book explores this misunstood trend.
