Seeing Influencer or Social Media roles that require 10+ years of experience is insane 😂 1) Lower your expectations if you're hiring for an influencer manager role. That wasn't a job a year ago. While someone may be well-versed in engaging with influencers, no one has 10 years of experience doing so. 2) I got my first job in social media in 2011 and was the Chairwoman of the Board for the National Institute for Social Media for several years, and I still don't know everything there is about social media marketing. No one does. It changes too quickly. Your next social hire should have grit and personality, both of which are far more valuable than algorithm knowledge. Happy hiring! #socialmediamanagers #influencermarketing
I disagree with this. As someone mentioned above, I've had over 10 years managing influencers and content creators but that role is for director level not manager level.
I started working with creators in 2016. I def think there are people with 10+ years experience.
But you have 13 years experience, no?
I was running Foursquare mayorships, Twitter accounts, and Facebook pages in 2011. Fohr and DBA have both been around longer than 10 years. I started hiring influencers in 2012. So yeah I have 12 years of experience specifically related to influencers and I'm not the only one. There are definitely people in this industry who are "vintage." And "Manager" means something different at every company. A manager at Amazon is not the same as a manager at a media agency.
I've worked with Youtube creators since the late 00s on brand endorsements and product integrations. So while it is absolutely possible to have 10+ years experience in the space, it wasn't codified the way it is today and was typically lumped in with marketing ad spends and classified as "new media" endorsements. The landscape has vastly changed though, especially with advent and scalability of short form media. Even though I'm a "Vet" I absolutely know there's always more to learn.
I am not sure I agree with this I have 12+ years experience working in social media and with influencers (although then we might have called them bloggers) and think there should be more levels in the job titles of social media professionals - you can have a head of social role hired for someone just out of uni and a head of social role with 12 years experience.
Not sure why that’s weird for leadership roles? I know many people with 10+ years experience.
I disagree. These roles SHOULD be senior or director level though because let's be real, this didn't fully kick off until 2010-ish. But I've been working with influencers myself for nearly 15 years so it's not really unreasonable nor insane to require 10+ years. I also disagree with the notion that a social person can't know everything there is to know about social because it changes too much. That's like saying a stock broker can't know the market because it's always changing. We KNOW it's always changing, and we know how to pivot and adapt to it, that's what makes some of us experts.
I’ve been working with influencers in some way since the end of 2009 and managed social accounts in 2011. Looking for someone with 10+ years isn’t unreasonable. I would say that I have 15 years of experience in influencer marketing and 13 in social media marketing.
Influencer consultant for brands (OREO, Land O’Lakes, Frigidaire, Albertsons and more) and agencies (Edelman, Ketchum, Weber Shandwick, etc.)
4mo👋🏼 I’ve had my influencer marketing agency for well over 10 years. I agree, a requirement for that much experience should be part of a VP or maybe Director level search, not manager. But please, can we stop saying that these unicorns 🦄 don’t exist? I may not have wings, but I’ve been at the leading edge of this industry since well before influencers were called influencers. 😉
