I am delighted to share that my abstract, titled "Estimating Ecological Health Indices (AMBI and M-AMBI) from the Marine Subfossil Record: A Case Example from Coastal North Carolina," has been successfully published in the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Southeast Section of the Geological Society of America. When assessing how habitats have been altered by human impacts, it is crucial to have initial data on ecosystems before human activities began. However, obtaining such information is often impossible in areas where human activities have been ongoing for an extended period, precluding effective bio-monitoring. Therefore, we used recent fossil records (dead assemblages) to access data predating human activities. Our analysis focuses on evaluating the agreement between live and sympatric dead assemblages using two widely recognized marine biotic indices: AMBI and M-AMBI. NEW PAPER by Saara Mäkelin and co-authors, showing that food quality matters for directing benthic faunal carbon stocks and process rates along a land-to-sea gradient. Availability of more fresh organic matter towards the open sea boosted faunal carbon storage, respiration rates and biomass production, essential processes for carbon turnover in coastal ecosystems. Our results emphasize that human activities in coastal areas modify the balance of environmental resources, which affects important links between biodiversity, structure and process rates of benthic communities and thus the functions they can provide. The interconnected dance of soil and water: World Soil Day 2023. World Soil Day 2023 will focus on the critical theme of "Soil and Water: A Source of Life." Soil and water are engaged in a delicate dance, a harmonious interaction that sustains life in all its forms. Inextricably linked, soil and water are the foundation of sustainable ecosystems and the basis for life on Earth. This theme highlights the profound interdependence between these two essential elements and underscores the need for global awareness and action to conserve and protect our precious soil and water resources. The intricate relationship between soil and water extends to supporting biodiversity. Healthy soils support diverse ecosystems by providing a stable environment for countless microorganisms, insects, plants and animals. These ecosystems, in turn, contribute to our planet's resilience in the face of environmental challenges, including climate change. Maintaining the balance between soil and water is fundamental to sustaining the intricate web of life that spans our globe. Recognizing the importance of this topic, CIPSEM will prepare a short course on #naturebasedsolutions and #ecosystemservices and #soilhealth in 2024. In Germany, the German Soil Science Society (DBG) has been organizing the "Soil of the Year" campaign since 2005 under the common umbrella of several (non-)governmental institutions. In general, the activities are intended to raise public awareness of soils and their functions and ecosystem services. The overall goal is to arouse the interest of as many people as possible to promote the responsible use and protection of this vital resource. For 2024, the "Soil of the Year" will be forest soil. A typical forest soil profile selected by the jury is the Stagnosol, which can be found in the Tharandt forest near Dresden. During the course of next year, participants will have the opportunity to observe this beautiful forest. The course is supported by several experts, but especially by Prof. Karl-Heinz Feger, Senior Professor at the Institute of Soil Science and Site Ecology at the TU Dresden and President of the German Soil Society.
