We lose so much when we do not value and lean on young people. 💪 They are brimming with passion, strength, agility and energy. ⏰ They have significant amounts of time and availability. 🎒 They can be humble, audacious learners, open to growing & listening. 🚀 They will try great things, fail and get back up again and not stop until they achieve their goals. Youth are a ready made volunteer movement that can be mobilized to impact our community's greatest issues. #loveyourcity #youthaschangemakers #changemakers #growingleaders #pipeline

💬 “To some extent, it’s kind of invasive, like ‘prove to us you’ve suffered enough.’ I imagine there’s a bunch of young people who poured out their suffering for their application but didn’t get the money—that’s kind of draining and unfair.” This powerful statement comes from our report 'A Wonderful Year' which details previous partners learning and feedback about the process of applying for and managing their Challenge and Change grants. This statement raises an important question: How can we make funding processes more compassionate and equitable, especially for young changemakers? Let’s talk about it. You can't change the world from the edges. Real impact requires: Being all in. I've watched hundreds of nonprofits. The ones that break through.... Better funded • Better staffed • Better positioned • Better connected They're better committed. While others: • Test the waters • Dip their toes • Play it safe • Hedge their bets They: • Take bold action • Make hard calls • Have tough conversations • Push through fear Because transformation doesn't happen through: • Half measures • Safe decisions • Slacktisvists • Comfortable choices • Easy paths The world has enough: • Part-time passion • Casual commitment • Surface-level service • Risk-free leadership Your community needs: Leaders who are all in. Teams who are all in. Organizations that are all in. Because impact isn't built on: "Let's see how it goes" "Maybe we'll try" "We'll test the waters" It's built on: "Whatever it takes" "We'll find a way" "This matters too much to fail" Do good work today! 

This list is pure gold for nonprofit leaders who want to see more innovation in their organizations. Thanks to Leah Kral. I would add, the more innovative nonprofits I observe also: 🔹Are very focused on their core mission 🔹Have concise, shared messaging about their impact 🔹Have a clear understanding of how all of their teams contribute to big picture shared goals I’ve also observed some innovative nonprofits fall short on: 👉A culture of learning (principle #5 below) 👉A willingness for power sharing (this relates to Leah’s principle #3) 👉Psychological safety Here’s my hunch. Nonprofits who pursue innovation but miss the mark in key principles and organizational culture will succeed in the short term. But long term they are at risk of high employee turnover and lower organizational sustainability. Thoughts?

One of the most important things the nonprofit sector can do to fuel growth is remain committed to the free exchanging of ideas and platforming as many perspectives as possible. Ideas, techniques, and strategies are not political in a nature. My answer to anyone who has disagreed with a presenter or organization's mission is to absorb what they're saying and use it to advance your own beliefs. While there can be comfort in tribalism, group think rarely produces innovations and sometimes the most transformative ideas are produced in discomfort. If you attend an event and only hear from speakers you agree with you should ask yourself. What part of the story am I missing? Be comfortable with being uncomfortable...
