Education is vital as it empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking needed to navigate life and contribute to the development of society. Education also opens doors to opportunities, reduces inequality, and promotes personal and economic growth. Ultimately, education shapes informed, capable, and responsible citizens. Education is the key of success By investing in children education we give them that key

In Africa, although the continent holds 19% of the world’s population aged 19–24, its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) capabilities fall behind the rest of the world. 🌐 At Tullow, we have helped bridge this gap by providing access to STEM education and technical skills. We are now focused on opening doors to meaningful and fulfilling careers for thousands of young people in our host countries.   This echoes with the theme of the International Day of Education today. This year, the United Nations encourages reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities to navigate, understand and influence technological advancement. We have proudly partnered with the Youth Bridge Foundation in Ghana on the ‘Educate to Innovate with STEM’ programme since 2017. This initiative has been internationally recognised for fostering academic progression and innovative projects such as Tullow STEM Radio.  Last year, we also launched Tullow Alumni Connect to provide scholarship beneficiaries with mentorship and job readiness skills including digital skills with the aim to connect them to jobs.   In 2024, our educational initiatives benefited more than 7,000 students in Ghana. One thing that stuck with me: Education is a public good. It is almost the one thing that can unify all the sustainable development goals when properly managed. It can be really expensive to manage. One key reason why we exist is to bridge the gap in educational access and quality, ensuring that learners are given the opportunity to unlock their full potential. In Ghana, 29% of children do not complete primary school, 53% do not complete lower secondary and 65% do not complete upper secondary (UNICEF, 2020). These figures are lower in rural areas of Ghana where we typically work, with access to pre-primary education at just 38%, compared to 90% for urban areas. The communities we work with often have no books aside from a few core textbooks, and regurgitative teaching and learning practices are still dominant despite the government's aim to promote student-centred learning and a range of soft skills. Our four learner strands and community-connected and sustainable resources promote play-based, practical pedagogy that relates to the community context and promotes the needs of future generations.
