I am excited to share insights from my journey into understanding the global sustainable food system! As I delve deeper into Week 3 of my course, I’m reflecting on the fundamental question: Why is it crucial to view the #foodsystem as a whole? From #production to #consumption, every aspect of the #foodsystem plays a pivotal role in shaping sustainability and its impact on our planet. Whether it’s the methods used to grow our crops, the transportation of goods, or the choices we make at the grocery store, each step contributes to the larger picture. Yet, it can be challenging to pinpoint which end of the #foodsystem holds the most significance in driving sustainability or causing negative impacts. Is it the #agricultural practices that determine the #environmental footprint of our food? Or perhaps it’s the consumption habits and food waste that contribute to resource depletion? By examining the food system holistically, we gain a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of these factors and the complex web of relationships that influence sustainability. Only by considering the system in its entirety can we identify opportunities for improvement and implement effective strategies to create a more sustainable future. I’m eager to continue exploring and sharing insights from my course as I deepen my understanding of the global food system. On the occasion of World Food Day, our researchers are sharing their top 3 solutions for sustainable food production and consumption. 👇 1. We don’t all have to become totally vegan. If all people would cut their use of animal products with 10 percent it would be as effective as 10 percent of people globally going vegan. 2. We need to increase our yields sustainably. A big part of agricultural emissions are from the land use, and if we manage to produce more food with the same amount of land, we can minimise the emissions. 3. We need to reduce the food waste. And not only in households, but also in the whole supply chain from production to transportation and supermarkets. It's possible to produce enough food for all the people sustainably.
