A great day was had in Birmingham last week, as our very own Lee Turnbull joined Roger Kennedy and Jonathan Nichols at the Utility Week WWT Innovation and Smart Water event. There was plenty of interest in the work that our combined organisations do in the Water industry, both in the UK and worldwide. We hope to be back at another event soon! An excellent example of the kind or work we do at AtkinsRéalis! Engineering and ensuring a sustainable environment, hand in hand
Row, row, row your bridge Gently down the stream... 🚣♂️🌉 Watch as our team floats a 36.7-meter bridge into place in Buckinghamshire, UK. While we're often known for major projects, we're equally proud of delivering smaller ones like this that have a big impact on local communities. The bridge restores a vital pedestrian link and the innovative installation method allowed us to overcome site challenges and minimize environmental impact. Big thanks to our partners Topbond PLC for making this happen. #InnovativeEngineering

I was honored to join New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, members of the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), Veolia employees and other officials to celebrate the launch of the new Hubgrade center at the New Orleans East Bank Wastewater Treatment Plant today. For over 30 years, Veolia has been a proud partner to the City of New Orleans and the Sewerage and Water Board. Our enduring relationship, built on trust and a shared vision, has only been strengthened through our collaborative response to challenges, including devastating natural disasters. Throughout our partnership, we've consistently discussed how to transform this vital asset into a force for positive change. As part of our GreenUp strategy, we are consistently finding ways to accelerate the deployment of affordable, replicable solutions that depollute, decarbonize and regenerate our resources. A city like New Orleans, facing unique challenges like rising sea levels and #climatechange, is a prime example of how GreenUp can support a community to develop a high-performing, sustainable wastewater system. The Hubgrade center, the first of its kind in America, represents a significant step towards that goal. By leveraging real-time data and advanced analytics, we can optimize #wastewater treatment for greater efficiency, cost savings, #energy conservation and reduced emissions. This initiative will drive economic growth, enhance quality of life and help build a brighter future for generations to come.

I'm looking forward to seeing the outcomes of this project and contributing to DCWW’s ambitious goals. The water industry is such an important part of the drive to reduce carbon emissions, and it's a major and exciting challenge to manage carbon while delivering the necessary benefits to people and the environment. In particular, gathering and managing data on existing and future assets is such a major undertaking and yet so critical to meeting carbon reduction goals. The more we can streamline and support that process as engineers, the more the whole industry will be able to move towards where we want to be. #Decarbonisation #DigitalInnovation #CarbonReduction
We're delighted to share that we will be supporting Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW) with its ambitious goals to reduce total carbon emissions by 90% by 2030. Our partnership will strengthen DCWW’s #CarbonManagement approach through #digital innovation and implementing our PAS 2080-aligned digital decarbonisation solution, Moata Carbon Portal, across its capital projects, supply chain and reporting functionalities. David Orr, our product lead for Moata Carbon Portal, said, “This collaboration marks an exciting stage in our #decarbonisation journey with DCWW. It’s fantastic to see an organisation take such an inclusive approach to support all employees and supply chain members to consider carbon in their work, to the benefit of communities across Wales.” Find out more, here. 👇 https://mottm.ac/4fdH1gf

At a time when pressure is growing for more treatment with greater resilience to major uncertain externalities such as climate change, our investment needs to be more nuanced to deliver much wider benefits; not least, lower carbon, greater flexibility and virtually no wastes such as sludge or media. Nature-based approaches are not new - they are just finding their moment as we accept that the trade-off of more land is not so much of a trade off when they can also be cheaper, and in this case much less land than a Reed Bed. Some approaches such as AERO-FAC® are not even a trade off on performance. We also need to reimagine how they are used - as side stream for pass forward issues or even taking off entire network flows at CSOs to address not only the discharge but also restoring greater capacity downstream. AERO-FAC® is a great example of a technology that lands in the sweet spot of certainty over efficacy, flexibility and resilience, cost and ease of permitting - yet there only a handful in existence in the UK. Are we serious about a transition in the water industry? If so why aren't we using this approach more? Discuss!
23 years of consistent service for Scottish Water utilising a Nature Based solution. Following the upgrade of the Errol Aero-Fac® wwtp last year, Scottish Water engaged us to carry out a factory service at the Tobermory and Bowmore Aero-Fac® plants on the islands of Mull and Islay. Having operated for 17 plus years, the work required was relatively minor and was completed, by our team, within a short period and without the need to take the treatment plants off line. As at Errol, the Aero-Fac® wwtps at Tobermory and Bowmore are now set for another 20 years operation providing Scottish Water with sustainable, Nature-Based solutions able to accommodate storm water, the varying flows and loads due to tourism but without requiring sludge handing or disposal. Learn how together Xylem & City of South Bend cut sewer overflows, saved costs and delivered on environmental targets 💚💧👍🏻 The results of our partnership with the city have been transformative, read more @ https://lnkd.in/et9__Ts6 🤝🏻 🦾 By leveraging digital technologies like smart sensors, we were able to tell continuously how to best manage each sewer’s capacity. 💰From a pure numbers perspective, the city spent $400 million less than originally expected. For South Bend, with a population of just over 100,000, if they hadn’t optimised their system by working with Xylem, the original cost estimate would have equated to about $10,000 per citizen. That's just the finances but there have also been additional benefits for the community. 🏞️ The city have been able to protect and enhance their flagship parks as well as improve the community aesthetics with green infrastructure thanks to the sewer sensor data that has helped inform the city where best to install new features. 💚 #AMP8 #EnvironmentAct2021 #CSOs #SpillsReduction #SmartSewers #RiversRevived #GetRiverPositive

Here's a preview of a slide for the presentation on Virginia Clean Cities webinar 'Idle Reduction Strategies' for you, tomorrow, Thursday, June 20, 3:00pm ET. The presentation is a collection of perspective from some of the leading fleet management subject matter experts on the topic of idle management in the U.S. The foundational lesson? It sounds obvious: if the funders of your idle reduction strategy aren't enthusiastic or on board, your strategy will likely get zero MPG and go nowhere. Hope you can join us on Thursday at 3:00pm ET. Relationship Mangement is crucial.
In 2023, Water Equity Network cities in the Great Lakes and Midwestern US convened for a two-day event bringing together cross-sector leaders. A panel of executive utility leaders discussed how meeting regulatory needs and prioritizing equity can go hand-in-hand. OJ McFoy, General Manager of Buffalo Sewer Authority, shared the importance building trust and transparency, along with how his team changed business as usual practices to work toward this ultimate goal. Explore more key takeways from McFoy and other participants here: https://lnkd.in/e2MP-Mvw #WaterEquity

Decarbonization plans and roadmaps should be adaptable with event triggers in place to bring forward change at opportune times: "One of the worst things we can see happen is an emergency equipment failure with no plan in place. The equipment gets replaced like-for-like with its fossil fuel equivalent and then you're in the same position for another 15-20 years. Planning for it now means you're ready when goals come around and you're ready for unplanned events." #sustainabledevelopment #sustainableinfrastructure #sustainablebuildings
