According to a 2021 McKinsey report, we’ll need more than 1.5 TW of long-duration storage by 2040 to maintain grid reliability. In order to deploy LDES at that scale — the scale we need to continue to decarbonize the grid and maintain reliability — we will need public policies that appropriately incentivize the buildout of these technologies. #renewables are the #fastest growing segment of #energy generation. But we need to #store the #energy to be used when #wind and #solar are not available. There are some #simple, #natural and #effective ways to do that #without #lithium. #thermalbatteries. E.g. 1) Sand battery - Uses #renewable energy to #heat #sand to 600 DegC, later #releasing the #heat (400 DegC) for #domestic heating. Polar Night Energy Oy have a prototype using 100 tonnes of low-grade sand in #finland, and are planning a new battery 10 x the size. 2) Heat bricks - each #brick weighs 500 kg. Rondo Energy have developed this #thermal brick to #store #heat at up to 1500 DegC that means it is #highly #suitable for #industrial processes to replace #coal. 3) Crushed #rock - building waste and quarry spoil can be used to make a #rock #battery. Brenmiller Energy ($BNRG) already has units in place providing #energy to #hospitals for example. 4) Molten #salts - #solar #heliostats #reflect the suns energy to a central receiving tower #heating molten salts to 560 DegC in a large tank. The molten salt can store the equivalent of 17 hours of energy. Cerro Dominador in #chile have one of the world's largest heliostat power stations that can #perate 24 hrs a day. Exciting times in the #energystorage area which has a dual purpose: it plugs gaps when the wind drops or the sun stops shining, and it allows users to buy cheap off-peak power and use it when they need it. Several options are being explored and ease of adoption, short vs long duration , commercials and carbon footprint will be the key factors in choosing the winners.

The energy industry talks about Hawaii as a “postcard from the future,” but state policymakers often dismiss the idea of copying Hawaii's policy successes. What’s more useful is extracting key lessons and design principles from Hawaii’s experience that can be built into any state’s policies around, for example, energy storage. The policies and programs highlighted in this article from Elizabeth Weise show that both large-scale storage and distributed small-scale storage can provide the grid services needed to replace a large coal plant.
