In New York, nonprofit employment has continued to decline over the past 5 years. While there are a number of factors contributing to this, it paints a picture of a bleak job market for job seekers, especially those who have the requisite experience in the sector. This may reflect the dwindling budgets of some organizations, but it can also be an opportunity for other nonprofits to expand their hiring. #Nonprofit #NonprofitEmployment #NonprofitJobs

Trust in nonprofits is up, yet people are leery of nonprofits advocating for social change. This is asking nonprofits to address problems with one hand tied behind their backs. Organizations addressing hunger in their communities know why people are hungry. Agencies assisting families know what leads to neglect reports. Groups working with those who experienced domestic violence know what keeps people safe and what doesn't. We should be trusting these experts - and encouraging them! - to raise their voices in the public square and with lawmakers. Human service agencies can do more than just plugging holes in the dam, they have a role in seeing that the dam actually gets fixed. https://lnkd.in/ehDmvgNi #nonprofit #humanservices #childwelfare #advocacy

New HistPhil post: Leah Reisman on some themes in her new book, Consulting to Nonprofits: Shared Values, Unintended Consequences (Stanford/SSIR, 2024). Among these: she highlights both the benefits and drawbacks of consultants' "empathetic customization"--the close customization performed by consultants to fit their nonprofit clients’ particularities and specific circumstances. https://lnkd.in/ebpPndCD

🌆 Insights from “Resilient Resolve: Supporting Justice in NYC’s Nonprofit Crisis” 🌆 Dive into our latest Program Insights piece where we dive into the key takeaways from "Resilient Resolve: Supporting Justice in NYC’s Nonprofit Crisis". The program featured Doug Bauer, Wes Caines, Kandra Clark, Sherene Crawford, Esq. and Taj Tabassoom unpacking the critical issues faced by NYC’s nonprofit community, which employs over 18% of the city's workforce and contributes billions to the local economy including: The current government contracting system is inefficient and places many nonprofits in a recurring cycle of operating with little to no resources every fiscal year. Existing bureaucratic systems have staggering effects that impact the ways funders support nonprofit partners and nonprofit staffers and, most importantly, the communities they serve. Cultivating the collective power of nonprofits and philanthropy can be one of the pathways to change. 🔗 Read the full insights here: https://lnkd.in/e_es-4qf #NonprofitSupport #Justice #NYCNonprofits #PhilanthropyNewYork

We are excited to share that Independent Sector – the national membership organization that brings together a diverse community of #changemakers, #nonprofits, #foundations, and corporations working to strengthen civil society – just released their 2024 Trust in Nonprofits and Philanthropy Report. We at NAO agree with IS that trust is what makes it possible for nonprofits to partner with local communities to do the hard work of #systemicchange. Our trusted voices as advocates for our missions help drive policy change. Our trusted status makes us an essential partner to government and industry. Trust is vital in the recruitment of volunteers and in the nonprofit sector’s work to bridge differences in a divided America. That is why this report is so vital. It helps nonprofit leaders spot trends and better understand what issues they need to plan for, as well as remind us of that valuable currency of trust that we’ve “banked” with the communities we serve. Payment delays disproportionately impact BIPOC led organizations because our organizations are less likely to have the cash reserves to float the government. City government contracts with nonprofits to provide critical services to New Yorkers. Those organizations are not eligible for payment until they can demonstrate that services have been provided. They are audited constantly, often at their own expense. When we say nonprofits aren’t being paid on time, we aren’t talking about a couple of dollars here or there. There are organizations that the city owes millions to for services already provided - and they could be waiting years for repayment. And guess what? If you need a line of credit to pay your staff and rent, the city will not reimburse you on the interest you owe because of their late payments. And let’s be clear, this is not a problem that began with the current administration. Late payments have been a way of life - and a source of incredible stress for leaders - for a long time. And to add insult to injury, the rates for services are completely in the hands of the city and those rates don’t often reflect the true cost to nonprofits. So the onus is on philanthropy to close the funding gaps. Which means sleepless nights and undue stress on nonprofits leaders. Need a good analogy? Let’s say you are a landlord and you rent an apartment and provide amenities to your tenants. Let’s say those tenants fail to pay you for months and years at a time, but your mortgage on the property is still due. You may be forced to take out additional loans and restructure the mortgage as a result. But the tenants decide they can pay you what they want when they feel like it? And if the refinancing adds additional financial burden on you, so what. Get it now? #blackwomeninnonprofitsmatter #blackwomenlead #nonprofitleadership
This is an important issue, but what is noticeably lacking is the discussion about the ability of larger, more outdated nonprofits to navigate cash flow challenges effectively (lines of credit, major donors, individual donors. private foundation resources, etc). Meanwhile, smaller, newer community-based (and led) nonprofits struggle to compete and innovate, leaving them stifled and vulnerable to dissolution.
