📣 Happy to see our entries on #mission #drift (with Johan Hvenmark & ChiaKo Hung) and #resource #diversification (with ChiaKo Hung & Jessica Berrett) published in the #International #Encyclopedia of #Civil #Society. By synthesizing existing research, both entries aim to extract key insights and identify avenues for future research. 🎯 An elusive concept, #mission #drift refers to the discrepancy between organizational actions and goals. In this entry, we discuss how mission drift can be viewed in both a negative and positive light, how it manifests in practice, and how nonprofits can manage it effectively. 🐣https://lnkd.in/eMMXHEnC 💰 Nonprofit #revenue #diversification refers to the strategy of obtaining funding from a variety of sources rather than relying heavily on a single source or type of revenue. In this entry, we discuss why nonprofits diverse their resources and how resource diversification impacts nonprofits' financial health and mission performance. 🐣 https://lnkd.in/e65vprru Department of Public Governance and Management (Ghent University) - The Gradel Institute of Charity

The fourth timeline in our series on the general history of fundraising is published today – https://lnkd.in/eC4FkJD4.. Covering antiquity/classical period (1000BCE until the start of the Middle Ages in 475CE), there are entries on: • Whether Byzantine hospitals invented modern fundraising (so it has been claimed but we couldn’t find the evidence) • St Paul – claimed to be the first career fundraiser but possibly also the first philanthropic psychologist • Was the Ancient Greek system of liturgies really as ‘voluntary’ as it was claimed? • Giving and asking in the Buddhist tradition • And plenty more. Thanks to project leader Marina Jones and team member Giovanna Bonora for their work on this instalment. This is the last of our timelines of general fundraising history, alongside the three we have already published on: • 20th and 21st centuries • Modern era (1500-1899) • Middle Ages (476-1499) A common theme as we get further back in time is that there is a lot of information on philanthropy – the act, process and ethics of giving; but very little on the corresponding act, process and ethics of asking philanthropists to give. Our timelines are designed to highlight gaps in our knowledge as much as showcase interesting nuggets and factoids, and there is no bigger gap than how fundraising has evolved to complement local traditions of philanthropy throughout history. While we may add to the four general history timelines as we find new things we think are worth including, future timelines will be thematic, exploring a particular type of fundraising, fundraising in a particular county, or fundraising issue. We’re currently planning timelines for Italian fundraising and media scandals and controversies. • You can view the antiquity/classical timeline here – https://lnkd.in/eC4FkJD4. • And you can access the other timelines via the history/historiography project page on the Rogare website – https://lnkd.in/eFMVtyKt

Top universities are increasingly focused on family office programs for fundraising—and for good reason. Today, there are over 8,000 family offices globally, a number projected to grow by 13% by 2025 and 75% by 2030. Schools like The University of Chicago, Wharton and many more are engaging these entities to align philanthropic goals with institutional needs. Family offices prioritize legacy, impact, and long-term value, making them strategic partners for endowments. Institutions like Harvard have leveraged these deep-pocketed donors, raising billions to fund scholarships, facilities, and key programs. Return on Good, with our global connections and expertise in impact marketing, can help universities tailor their messaging to resonate with family offices. By aligning institutional missions with the values of these families, we create compelling, AI-driven campaigns that foster multi-generational support and long-term partnerships. Return on Good
