Not every family business chooses us when it comes to making those all-important non-family hires—and I get it… Some prefer industry specialists who say they know everyone in their field. It feels like the safer option, right? 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: If those specialists are any good they will already working with multiple businesses in your industry, so they can’t exactly approach all the top talent— many will be 'off-limits' due to client conflicts. That shrinks your talent pool right from the start. Some families lean on their own networks, and sure, that can work—good people know other good people. But it can also limit your options, and I’ve seen too many hires go wrong because the assessment wasn’t as thorough as it should’ve been. Now, let’s be honest: executive search isn’t cheap. But it’s far more affordable than hiring the wrong person, only to have them leave (or need to be let go) six months later. Bringing a non-family executive into a family business is always tricky. I’ve done this for years, and I can tell you—it’s a whole different ballgame from hiring for corporate roles. I’ve seen so many great hires go wrong, often for the same reasons, and it could’ve been avoided with the right approach. At TWYD & Co., we've learnt from our own mistakes. We like to think that we've become experts at spotting the red flags early on—the kind of challenges that are unique to family enterprises and that other recruiters sometimes overlook in their rush to place a candidate. But when the hire unravels down the line, it’s too late. Finding someone with the right skills isn’t the hardest part anymore—LinkedIn makes that easier. The real challenge is finding someone who’s actually the right 𝙛𝙞𝙩 for your family and for your enterprise. And that’s where we come in. It’s not just about who looks good on paper; it’s about finding someone who will thrive in your unique family environment. We take the time to really understand your family dynamics before we even start the search, making sure the person we find is set up for long-term success. We may not be for every family, and that’s okay. But for the families we do work with? We’re in it to get it right. #familybusiness #familyoffice #leadership #Succession #TalentWithYourDNA
