As a passionate advocate for gender equality and women's health, I'm delighted with this groundbreaking announcement. Yesterday, Melinda French Gates announced a $1 billion commitment through 2026 to advance women’s power globally. This investment comes at a critical time when women's rights face significant challenges. Melinda's focus on health and wellbeing underscores her belief that health is crucial for women to realise their full potential in society. This $1B commitment will include the following grants: 1. $200 million in grants to U.S. organisations fighting for women's rights, including reproductive freedom. 2. $240 million to 12 global leaders, each with a $20 million fund to support innovative work improving women's health and wellbeing. 3. $250 million through an open call with Lever for Change, targeting organisations enhancing women's mental and physical health worldwide. Melinda stated, "For too long, a lack of money has forced organisations fighting for women's rights into a defensive posture while the enemies of progress play offense. Reposting this important update: Eleven years ago, Brandon Zelasko faced rejection when trying to donate blood due to his sexual orientation. After a similar experience following the Club Q shooting in 2022, it’s encouraging to see the FDA finally lift the ban on gay men donating blood. Now, the challenge is for blood donation organizations to rebuild trust with the #LGBTQ community and effectively engage new donors. The assault on DEIA, gender inclusivity, equality, environment, and reproductive rights is an attack on fundamental human values. Nonprofits exist to solve problems and support those the for-profit and government sectors do not. If your organization provides DEIA-focused services, LGBTQA+ services, environmental justice, or reproductive rights services—do not shrink. Do not pull back. Now is the time to stand firm. Nonprofits are needed more than ever. Volunteer, advocate, donate. Grateful to the National Council of Nonprofits for filing suit to stop this unlawful funding freeze. Nonprofits rely on federal, state, foundation, corporate, and individual contributions to carry out their critical work. Melinda French Gates Announces $1B Commitment to Advance Women’s May 28, 2024 Today, Melinda French Gates announced that as the first step in the next chapter of her philanthropy she is committing an additional $1 billion through 2026 to advance women’s power globally. With the rollback of women’s rights and headwinds to social progress in the U.S. and around the world, Melinda believes that now is the time to provide urgent capital to people and organizations fighting to protect and further equality and remove the barriers that hold women back. This includes investing in the health and well-being of women and families, in line with her belief that health is a critical lever in enabling women to have their full power in society. This $1B commitment will include the following grants made by Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation: $200 million in grants aimed at supercharging the work of organizations that are fighting in the U.S. to advance women’s power and protect their rights, including reproductive freedom. These grants will be structured to provide flexible funding to spend as organizations see fit. $240 million devoted to partnerships with a diverse group of 12 global leaders.
