Can AI generation be detected in a way that’s accurate and repeatable? The answer is not that simple. But you can at least attempt to come up with an answer that has a relative validity. And if you are actually looking to best detection, the answer lies within prompt engineering and not which model you use (this still plays some part still). We’ve seen how powerful Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is for making AI more accurate by tapping into external knowledge. But with that power comes new risks. Researchers have uncovered a worrying new attack called PoisonedRAG that targets these systems. It works by sneaking just a few carefully crafted, malicious texts into the system’s knowledge base, attackers can manipulate the AI to give specific, targeted answers. What’s alarming is the 90% success rate in tests with only five malicious entries—against a large database. Current defenses aren’t holding up, which means this is an urgent issue for anyone working with RAG systems or AI more broadly. We need to start thinking seriously about how we can prevent these types of vulnerabilities before they get exploited in the real world. My takeaway: As we continue advancing AI, security can’t be an afterthought.
