Addressing masculinities and engaging men and boys in the prevention of men's violence against women
A reminder that Changing the picture outlines a range of actions that non-Indigenous people can take to challenge the condoning of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, challenge and prevent all forms of racism, indifference, ignorance and disrespect towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures, and address racialised power inequalities and amend discriminatory policies and practices - all factors which lead to the unacceptably high rates of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women: https://lnkd.in/dX4tMzHN
Read our full statement on the recent report on missing and murdered First Nations women and children on our website: https://bit.ly/3yHgV4K [Alt: White text on a navy background with green accents. Quote "For anything to change we first need to be honest about why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women experience violence at the rates we do. Ongoing impacts of colonisation and deeply embedded racism, discrimination and bias in our society, systems and structures create a breeding ground where violence against our women is more likely to occur and be accepted." .When will voters realize MAGA shares same ideologies & objectives as totalitarian regimes: Fascism, Islamic fundamentalists, Stalin, & now Putin. We're about to side w/latter & betray Ukraine which defends us all w/its blood. Our Asian & EU allies will indeed expect very same treatment & trust down to ZERO. Consequences, political, economical & military will be staggering & rightly so.

It's truly disheartening to see the recent actions taken by the House to tack on culture war amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The House Armed Services Committee dedicated significant time and effort to address crucial quality of life issues affecting our servicemembers. They listened to senior enlisted leaders from each service, aiming to improve the lives of those who defend our nation. Instead of respecting this bipartisan effort, some House members chose to derail the measure with amendments that have nothing to do with national security. These amendments, which aim to deny medical care and dismantle offices dedicated to fighting discrimination, are a slap in the face to those who have put their lives on the line for this country. Military service has always been a pathway for marginalized and disadvantaged communities to prove themselves and earn their way into the middle class. Now, Republicans are working to shut these doors of opportunity, hurting those who serve our nation with honor and courage. It doesn't matter if you agree with someone's lifestyle. If they've served in the military, they've earned the right to live their life as they see fit. It's disgraceful that politicians are using the NDAA to push a divisive agenda that undermines the very people who make our freedoms possible. These servicemembers deserve our respect, our support, and the resources they need to thrive. They should not be pawns in a political game. As a country, we stand for liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s appalling to see political points scored at the expense of servicemembers, veterans, and military families. This behavior is not only shameful but a betrayal of our national values.

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States. But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. #freedom #Juneteenth #katy #stafford #houston #houstontx #cypresstx ##missouricitytx

Reflecting on Service and Sacrifice This Memorial Day Weekend #VerdictAlert #Jurimatic As Memorial Day weekend begins, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Their courage and dedication allow us to enjoy the freedoms we cherish today. As we honor the fallen this Memorial Day weekend, we're reminded of the complexities involved in shaping defense policies over time. The 1981 Supreme Court case Rostker v. Goldberg highlights this, upholding the male-only registration requirement for potential military conscription at that time. While acknowledging women's contributions in the all-volunteer forces, the Court deferred to Congress's assessment that drafting women during mass conscription was impractical based on military necessity. However, dissenting voices advocated for gender equity in registration. The Rostker decision centered on Congress's authority over military affairs but allows us to reflect on the armed forces' continual evolution to uphold America's ideals of equal rights and inclusivity. From integration to expanding roles for women, our military perseveres to embody the values that so many have sacrificed to secure.
