Despite the many years of national focus on improving patient safety outcomes, we continue to have staggering statistics involving preventable deaths, illnesses, and injuries that are due to #medicalerrors. Additionally, because #communication breakdowns and associated problems with inter-professional relationships have long been major contributors to these alarming problems, #nurses must develop skills and promote positive interpersonal dynamics. #health #healthcare #nurse #nursing #nurses #CE #CNE #continuingeducation Learn more: https://bit.ly/48Ha2MU

'As information brokers and patient advocates, critical care nurses can and should play a key role in facilitating goal-concordant care....Improved verbal and written communication that is inclusive of all members of the treating team is key to addressing these issues.' ➡ https://lnkd.in/gr97Ki3X #GoalsofCare #ICU #GoalConcordant #communication #SharedDecisionMaking #nurses #CriticalCare

PhD Candidate at the University of Melbourne, family end-of-life care researcher. I am passionate about improving the support and care provided to families of patients who die in the ICU.
This important piece of work suggests that by empowering critical care nurses to work to their full scope of practice, the provision of goal-concordant care in intensive care settings may be optimised: "They described themselves as information brokers, who acted as the 'mediator in the middle' (P9) and as liaison 'between the patient and the doctors … to facilitate, communicate, and help plan' (P11), promoting mutual understanding and encouragement of collaborative, patient-centred care planning." Moreover, this research speaks to the critical importance of processes that encourage proactive person-centred communication in intensive care settings, as a means to overcome potential barriers to goal-concordant care. Considering these findings alongside the existing empirical and theoretical evidence-base, effectively engaging critical care nurses as a member of the multidisciplinary team may optimise collaborative goal-concordant care in intensive care setting. Further, developing and testing processes that support clinicians to more consistently effect proactive person-centred communication in critical care may lead to improved patient outcomes, improved family satisfaction with care, and a reduction in nurse moral distress. This is particularly important when patient prognosis in uncertain, and at the end-of-life in intensive care settings. Thanks to Laurie Saffer, Prof Anastasia Hutchinson & Prof Melissa Bloomer for this important contribution.
