Pediatric physiatrists — doctors that treat conditions of the bones, muscles, joints, brain and nervous system — are in short supply in California’s rural communities. Also known as PM&R specialists, short for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, their role is important: They oversee physical and occupational rehabilitation therapies, recommend medical equipment and identify children who may need surgical interventions. But the shortage presents a barrier to care when insurance companies refuse to pay for the time needed for physiatrists to travel to remote areas, which in California can be 100 miles or more from the physiatrist’s original location. https://lnkd.in/e74Xfika #telehealth #telemedicine #pediatricphysiatry #pediatric #childrenshealth #bonehealth #brainhealth #muscles #joints #neurology #occupationaltherapy #physicaltherapy #rehabilitation #pmr #physiatrists #physicaltherapists

Excited to share our latest published article "Point‑of‑Care Ultrasound in Pediatric Emergency Care in Low‑Resource Settings: A Literature Review of Applications, Successes, and Future Directions" In this review, we explore how Point‑of‑Care Ultrasound (POCUS) can improve pediatric emergency care by enabling rapid, accurate diagnoses, minimizing radiation and enhancing outcomes while being cost-effective in low-resource settings. We also highlight success POCUS implementation and training programs from different low-middle income countries, and discuss the challenges and future directions, including telemedicine, policy support, and AI integration. This review holds potential to serve as a guide for similar applications in many low-resource settings around the world. Grateful to collaborate with Dr. Mohammed Alsabri. A study authored by Dr. Mattina Davenport, an investigator in our Center for Child Health Equity and Outcomes Research, explores the impact of biases in clinical documentation on pediatric sleep research. This research highlights the importance of addressing biases in clinical documentation to ensure that machine learning models used in pediatric sleep research are accurate and equitable. This is crucial for improving the detection and treatment of sleep disorders across all racial and ethnic groups, ensuring that every child has the opportunity for better health outcomes. #NationwideChildrensHospital #NationwideChildrens #NCHforDocs #Pediatrics #Research “study” = https://lnkd.in/guvWhCXX “Dr. Mattina Davenport” = Mattina A. You are invited to our next NeoMINDAI open and learning session about #AI and its applications in healthcare, especially #pediatrics and #neonatal critical care medicine. Dr. Alvaro Moreira will be highlighting his outstanding work applying #ML to further our understanding of "omic" contributions to lung disease related to prematurity, commonly called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD is a disease that unfortunately, has only been increasing in surviving premature babies (https://lnkd.in/gHm7ba7H). We still do not understand what factors associated with BPD may be modifiable to decrease the incidence rate. Dr. Moreira from UT Health San Antonio and his team are shedding some much needed light on the topic. Here are some of their previous publications: https://lnkd.in/gf88uvDF and https://lnkd.in/gRnu4fnw Come join us for an exciting and enlightening virtual presentation and discussion. Our sessions are open to anyone interested in improving neonatal and pediatric healthcare. https://lnkd.in/gKFsJWkP Normally these sessions are the 4th Thursday of the month at 3pm EST, but since that date falls on Thanksgiving next week, we have moved it to Tuesday November 26th at 3 PM EST. #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter

Digoxin: A Lifeline for Fetal Heart Failure? A study by Dhaval Patel et al. (2008) explored the effects of transplacental digoxin in treating fetal congestive heart failure (CHF) with sinus rhythm. The Cardiovascular Profile Score (CVPS)—a 10-point system assessing cardiac dysfunction—was key in monitoring progress. Key Findings: Digoxin improved CVPS scores, reducing signs of CHF. A CVPS of ≥6 was the best predictor of survival (83% sensitivity, 75% specificity). Umbilical venous notching was a strong indicator of poor outcomes. While promising, further studies are needed to confirm its efficacy for specific CHF causes. #FetalMedicine #HeartHealth #Digoxin #MaternalCare #PediatricsResearch
