This! Get back to technical HS programs even for med students to streamline education. Trim the excess in academia and get to the legitimate coursework and training. The model where med/nursing students are trained as EMTs and techs upfront to learn patient management throughout med programming makes for some wise and confident practitioners. Learning medical care in real time, hands on needn’t be delayed.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I have been asked this seemingly common question many times from people interested in knowing my plans after Nursing school. From the very moment I started clinical posting, I began to see things a little different from how I used to before my admission into the university. Nursing is far beyond just administering injections and drugs. High level of skilled expertise is required. Among my colleagues, it has become quite common to see most students display their lack of interest in practicing after graduation. Many also try to give reasons for their lack of interest in practicing after years of intense studying. While I agree that some of their reasons are quite valid, I strongly believe that investing in Nursing futures will go a long way in developing the interests of both Nursing students and graduate nurses. How can this be achieved? 📝 By sustaining Nursing education in universities and schools of Nursing. To start with, Nursing education needs to have a review of the curriculum such that the educational system is ultimately targeted at improving knowledge among students. The provision of adequate facilities and standardized structures such as well equipped laboratories for practicals with modern simulators and instruments, frequent training for educators, modernized teaching practices with new and interactive methods will go a long way in developing interests and increasing knowledge of Nursing students in the profession. 📝 By encouraging mentorship programs. Mentor-mentee programs have become increasingly necessary as they have a major role to play in raising a student's confidence and improving problem solving abilities. These programs have proven to be helpful in identifying and achieving career goals. Research has also shown that having a mentor can improve overall emotional health. Encouraging students and young nurses to have mentors in Nursing will spark their interests towards different fields and specialities. 📝 Improving working conditions and increased pay. Lack of adequate pay and poor working conditions in many health facilities today has contributed to the reasons why many students have no interest in the profession. By increasing remuneration, prioritizing safety, and providing good working conditions for nurses, more students and graduates would be encouraged to practice. 10 years from now, my utmost desire is to make a sustainable difference and impact in the healthcare settings such that through my actions I am able to restore hope to individuals, embody the spirit of compassion, and achieve remarkable growth. Today, I celebrate the wonderful Nurses that have continued to contribute their own quota to developing the health sector. I believe that with collective efforts, more students like me would get equipped with the necessary skills needed to maintain a healthy society. You can bring in as many new nurses as you want. But if you have outdated nurses teaching them, and new nurses orienting them and place them in toxic unsafe work cultures, you will just keep losing them. Professionalism is gone. Assessment skills are gone. Patients know they are in the hands of someone who has no idea what they are doing, which makes them terrified and they become violent. No amount of free college is worth what we are seeing out here. It’s like people are saying, oh yeah there’s a nursing shortage let’s train more nurses! But don’t listen to us seasoned nurses when we are telling you, it’s not us just complaining. It’s bad. It’s really really terrible. As a 15 year seasoned trauma nurse I should not be crying on my way home because I felt so frustrated by what I see each shift. You train more inexperienced nurses and the rate of nurses leaving in the first year just keeps getting higher. Maybe the issue is not the funding and lack of training, but the poor training and lack of safe workplaces? Major disruption is needed in talent management pipelines. Assessment of prior learning and work experience, as well as credit for prior learning, cannot be ignored. Talent pipelines may seem foolproof, but we all know what happens when pipes break or crack. It's a commitment across the continuum, starting with learning and development.
