Over 2 billion hectares of forests globally - more than twice the size of the United States - are degraded and in need of restoration. Forest landscape restoration (FLR) initiatives are essential to reduce the net rate of forest loss. These initiatives help address climate change and align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 👉 FSC’s responsible forestry standards are particularly relevant to achieving SDG 15: Life on Land. As an official indicator for SDG 15.2, FSC promotes and implements sustainable forest management, including halting deforestation, restoring degraded forests, and increasing afforestation and reforestation. Given the broad range of stakeholders and actors involved in FLR and SDGs, each with their interests, it is key to research the policy and governance aspects of FLR in the context of SDGs. Join our session tomorrow at the IUFRO World Congress to learn more! ✅ ‘T3.9 Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) and SDG Goals from the Lens of Forest Policy and Governance’ 📌 Sub-session: ‘A policy mix for achieving ambitious goals on forest landscape restoration: Analyzing coherence and consistency in forest-related policy.’ 📅 25 June, 08:30 – 10:30; Musse Tesfaye, Room 14 Find our full programme here: https://lnkd.in/e2v5xpUw #IUFRO2024 #ForestsForAllForever #30yearsOfFSC #SDG15

🌱💡 Forest fibre could provide 500-600 Mt CO2eq in lower emissions, or 25% of the way towards EU's goal of net-zero by 2050. When wood fibre-based alternatives replace fossil-based materials, emissions are reduced. Dramatically. But this part of the many climate benefits of forest products has, unfortunately, often received less attention. This is why FAM AB and Future of Forestry commissioned AFRY to study the substitution potential of forest-based products in the EU forest value chain. The report shows that the substitution effect could play a significant role for the EU to reach its climate targets while also building the European bioeconomy to transition away from fossil-intense materials and processes that could be replaced by forest fibre products from sustainable forestry. Canada's "Sustainable" Logging Exposed: A shocking new investigation by Reuters reveals that even certified logging operations in Canada are destroying crucial old growth forests. 🌲 🌳 While these forests are vital for combating climate change, the certification programs like Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative have been compromised by industry influence. They've allowed logging companies to clear-cut centuries-old trees, undermining the very principles they claim to uphold. It's time to demand real accountability and transparency. We need to protect our forests for future generations. https://lnkd.in/extqYjNq

🌲 Today, United Nations International Day of Forests, we are reminded that forests are often referred to as the lungs of our planet. They play a vital role in regulating the Earth's climate and supporting diverse ecosystems. But they are in peril. For years we have witnessed environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity from unsustainable forest management practices, such as deforestation and illegal logging, which exacerbates climate change. 🌳 At Climate Asset Management, sustainable forestry forms an integral part of our Natural Capital Strategy, alongside regenerative agriculture and environmental assets, as it balances economic, environmental, and social impacts. 🌱 In this short paper, https://lnkd.in/eGD9XBng James Bullen, Senior Forestry Investment Manager, shares some of his insights and outlines our approach to the sector. #NatureIsCapital #NaturalCapital #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateResilience #SustainableForestry #InternationalDayOfForests

Forestry’s Hidden Challenge you dont know about. Forests help absorb harmful greenhouse gases (GHGs). I think you know that. :) But... that might not be enough to step up our fight against climate change. Studies show that in a few decades, forests could store less carbon due to sustainable wood production and slower tree growth. Here’s the bigger issue: Forestry’s indirect role—like using wood to replace more polluting materials—often goes unnoticed, even though it helps cut emissions. The truth? Sustainable forestry alone can’t guarantee a consistent climate benefit in the long run. What you think?

#forests 🌳 are still our greatest protection against the climate change. There is a lot of talk about #Bluecarbon but we should not forget the trees and the impact they have on our everyday life. Not just to produce O2, but as well to produce #wood for paper, furniture and much more. The importance of the forest cannot be overstated. This post from our partner First Climate also shows new innovations, which can help us reduce plastic or improve batteries. 👇 https://lnkd.in/dyqwSuCf This makes it very important for forestry companies to ensure the balance between the need for wood and the afforestation. They need to be sustainable. VIRIDAD CTO Dainius Stankevičius is an arborist, and on his initiative VIRIDAD would like to start a project to open our software for 3 organizations involved in: ⭐ Afforestation ⭐Conservation forestry ⭐Forest management ⭐Rehabilitation and restoration of forests, including reforestation and natural forest regeneration after an extreme event We want to do our part and we would love your input! To apply, write us via Linkedin or email! And tell us your story and how the EU Taxonomy can help you! #forestday #sustainability #CSRD

“The land use transition that needs to happen…is a couple of things: One is stopping tropical deforestation, which is roughly 10 percent of total global emissions. And the other big thing we need is something like six hundred million hectares of reforestation, most of that in emerging markets, over the next 10 to 15 years. It’s just a matter of getting the capital flowing there” Sustainable Forestry Investing: New Forests’ Head of Impact & Advocacy, Radha Kuppalli on her Carbon Forestry Strategy, Climate Change Mitigation, Carbon Finance, the Bio-economy & More Listen to my full interview with Radha here: https://lnkd.in/gGP8D255

American Forests' president and CEO Jad Daley recently released a peer-reviewed article in Frontiers to set the record straight about #Reforestation. 🌲 The article discusses how reforestation can combat climate change while highlighting the essential forestry practices needed to ensure these new forests can thrive in changing climates. (Trees can't fix climate change alone, but they're a big help.) 🌳 It also shows how reforestation can support other important goals like #biodiversity, moving away from having to choose between one or the other. 🌲 Jad also talks about the role of various forest products in the #Forests4Climate movement and how reforestation ensures we maintain ample forest resources, from untouched old growth to actively managed areas. (Wood is a longstanding sustainability solution.) Read it here: https://lnkd.in/dekC5V4F
