Happy Monday Drivers! Today for Mental Health Monday, we'll be focusing on TIME. The life expectancy of the average male truck driver is between 55.7 years for independent, and 63 years for unionized, compared to the average of 75.1 years of the general population (Garbarino et al., 2018). This means that professional drivers have an average of 12.1 to 19.4 reduced life expectancy due to lifestyle. Staff that are not exposed to the environment a truck driver is involved in, suffers a disconnect of understanding the environment and its challenges. Professional drivers need time for physical wellness, mental health, personal care, and healthy eating meal preparation. TIME - Drivers are human they need time to take care of themselves to continue doing their job. Drivers rarely have a primary care provider, and this is necessary for their health and wellness. Telehealth only goes so far. Drivers will often time have undiagnosed health issues that can lead to dangerous medical episodes on the highway. Other positions in fleet have time to have regular health check-ups, practice self-care and have time to prepare healthy meals. Fairness in necessary and consideration towards a human being that sacrifices so much to feed America is needed. This is a subject and discussion that has to be prevalent in the trucking world.
