Minister of State at the Department of Transport, James Lawless, recently announced the high-level outcomes of the Mid-term Review of the Regional Airports Programme. Outcomes: Development of a new Regional State Airports Sustainability Programme with a capital budget of €4.225 million to support the sustainability plans of Cork and Shannon airports. Expansion of the scope of sustainability projects funded under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025 to include initiatives related to the production of electricity from renewable sources, such as Solar PV farms. The mid-term review also considered expanding the Programme's scope to regional airports handling more than one million passengers annually. Minister Lawless stated, "This Programme, with a budget of approximately €4 million, mirrors the sustainability objectives of the Regional Airports Programme by supporting capital investment at Shannon and Cork airports." 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟   We are thrilled to announce the successful kick-off meeting of the REDU-CE-D project, held this Tuesday, May 14th in Dubrovnik! 🚀   🔍 About REDU-CE-D: REDU-CE-D is a pioneering initiative under the Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE 2021-2027 program. The project focuses on developing a Customized Environmental Management System (EMS) to enhance energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption across various transport modes in Central Europe. 🌍   🎯 Project Objective: The primary aim of REDU-CE-D is to elevate energy efficiency within Central Europe's transportation sectors, including air transport, urban transport, waterway transport, and rail transport. By aligning with EU standards and implementing a jointly defined strategy, the project seeks to transpose the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) into practical solutions for sustainable transportation. 🚄✈️🚢🚌   💼 What Happened at the Kick-off Meeting: During the event hosted by Dubrovnik Airport, all project partners convened to discuss critical aspects of implementation, including Work Packages (WPs), objectives, outputs, activities, and related deliverables. It's great to see our Ireland Annual Review 2025 published last week. A key takeaway is the benefits of programmatic thinking in tackling infrastructure and housing challenges, as well as its crucial role in successfully integrating sustainability into developments. The review also emphasises how CAP24's focus on heat decarbonisation, reducing embodied carbon, and enhancing energy efficiency is crucial for the built environment to meet the 2030 targets. Decarbonising transport infrastructure and otherwise working towards improving the sector’s sustainability were hot topic issues at yesterday's Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Summit in Melbourne. Roads Australia’s CEO, Ehssan Veiszadeh, shared insights around how critical circularity and sustainability has become for our members, particularly those in the construction sector. The panel also discussed industry’s ongoing collaboration in the decarbonising space, noting the importance of fostering an environment that supports government-industry collaboration, and enables all stakeholders to take a truly strategic and long-term view to improve the sector and decarbonisation in Australia, rather than fixating on specific targets or getting caught up in trends. Other panelists were Adam Copp, CEO of Infrastructure Australia; Julia Hinwood, Infrastructure Director at the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, and Patrick Hastings, Acting Chief Executive Officer at the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC). #Industry #Transport #Sustainability #Collaboration #Australia

The European Commission announces a record €7 billion investment in sustainable, safe, and smart transport infrastructure via the Connecting Europe Facility. With 83% of funds dedicated to #climate_objectives, major projects include Rail Baltica, Lyon-Turin, and Fehmarnbelt Tunnel. Port upgrades, waterway enhancements, and intelligent road systems are also featured. #Regional 🌎 | 🚍 Caribbean Development Bank organized a virtual workshop on the development of sustainable public transport systems in the Caribbean 🚃 Public transportation in many of the CDB's Borrowing Member Countries faces significant challenges: ·        Inadequate service and reliability ·        Poor organization ·        Limited accessibility for vulnerable populations ·        Traffic congestion and pollution from route taxis ·        Susceptibility to climate change impacts In 2021, thanks to the European Union’s delegated funds to AFD, CDB commissioned consulting firm mcrIT to assess and propose solutions for creating a sustainable public transport system, using Grenada and Saint Lucia as case studies. On July 30, 2024, a comprehensive framework to sustainably improve public road transportation in the Caribbean was presented. 🚀 Key Proposals: 1.     Customer-Centric Approach: ·   Strict quality controls for bus services ·   New contract schemes for focused service delivery ·   Redesigned bus networks with express routes and feeder lines ·   Improved bus stops and comprehensive timetables 2.     Operational Enhancements: ·   Fleet optimization ·   Transition to environmentally friendly buses ·   Enhanced driver training and working conditions ·   Extended service hours 3.     Infrastructure & Regulation: ·   Optimized network design for better coverage ·   Enforced regulations to reduce traffic congestion ·   Addressing high costs of vehicle procurement and maintenance 4.     Innovative Solutions: ·   Increasing administrative capacity ·   Implementing cashless payment systems and user information portals ·   Enhancing accessibility for vulnerable populations This workshop underscored the need for integrated transit and land use planning to reduce private vehicular traffic and promote sustainable urban growth.
