🇫🇷 France’s republican front has triumphed once again, but the struggle is far from over. ❗Although it finished third, the far-right National Rally gained more than 50 seats in parliament and won the votes of more than 8 million people. The party will remain a significant force in Europe, where it has many far-right allies around the continent – allies that wish to ban abortion and gender transition, allies that target queer families. ✊ To avoid catastrophe in future, France will need to continue to counter extremism wherever it is found. The fight is not over yet, and with more women than ever voting for the far-right, we will need feminist answers in the years to come. 💟 Luckily, there are feminists around the world who have experience standing up to the forces of extremism, and they have much to teach us, wherever we are, and whether we can vote or not. We spoke with Debora Diniz and Marcia Tiburi (Brazil), Zsofi Borsi (Hungary), Verónica Gago (Argentina), and Teesta Setalvad (India) on how feminists are fighting the far-right. 🔗 Read Megan Clement's article: https://lnkd.in/dPBitrgm

2024 is an election year, with over 4 billion people casting their votes in more than 60 countries, including India. It's a gentle reminder that elections matter, and they have consequences. For instance, when Donald Trump won the 2016 election in the United States, he nominated three Supreme Court justices during his single-term presidency. All three of them voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, eliminating the right to abortion. In Iran, the Islamic Revolution of 1979 led to a decimation of women's rights after the Islamic Republic replaced the secular, pro-American monarchy. Social freedoms diminished, and women became the "first sacrificial lambs of the pre-revolutionary movement" (according to Iranian scholar Haleh Esfandiari) Rights such as divorce, freedom of clothing, and child custody were taken away from women. Men gained the ability to have multiple wives and control various aspects of women's lives, reversing the progress made during the previous era. While losing rights in any democracy is disheartening, it's even worse to lose rights that were hard-fought and won by previous generations. Here's hoping that 2024 is a year that broadens the contours of democracy and expands the protection of civil society. #ElectionsMatter #Democracy #CivilRights #WomenRights #2024Elections
