In his new Forefront article, Evan Hsiang from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute argues that congressional leaders should work with the IRS in narrowing the “community benefit” standard for nonprofit hospitals. "In fact, smaller “add-on” acquisitions are part of a more insidious trend in clinic acquisition. First, more nonprofit hospitals are turning to joint ventures with private-equity firms. About 8 percent of private hospitals, including both for-profit and nonprofit hospitals, are now owned or operated by private-equity firms. Private-equity firms make up 77 percent of physician practice acquisitions as of 2020 compared to 34 percent in 2016.The value of private-equity deals in health care overall has increased 20-fold from 2000 to 2018, with health care becoming the second-largest sector for private-equity deals. Additionally, private-equity firms are increasingly practicing serial acquisition, the practice of using a portfolio company to perform a series of small acquisitions. As of 2022, serial acquisitions comprise 70 percent of private-equity deals. Empowered by additional funds, these hospitals or health care corporations can acquire smaller clinics owned by individual or small collectives of physicians. In this fashion, monopolies on local populations of patients become established, enabling prices to rise for privately insured patients and increasing the cost of care above market prices." These grants have been made possible due to funding provided by the June Towle Trust. June Towle passed away in 2023. As part of her legacy, she established the June Towle Trust that would see money from her estate be donated to the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation upon her passing. We greatly appreciate these legacy funds that June left to the Foundation and hope to honour June’s memory through our micro grant program. Senior Care Micro Grants – Criteria Applications are open to community and not-for-profit organizations, including medical organizations, that run programming and services, or are proposing to run programming and services, within the boundaries of Peterborough City and/or Peterborough County, Hiawatha First Nation and Curve Lake First Nation. Proposed projects must be general in scope (inclusive of and impactful on as many people as possible). Project completion must occur within one (1) year of approval unless extension is granted by Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation. Grant funding can be applied to existing projects or used as seed money for new projects. Maximum of $5000 available for each grant. A maximum of $10,000 is available across all grants (two total). Project timeline and budget must be provided. As you might know, earlier this month, I made a significant shift in my career and stepped in as President & CEO of the Longevity Science Foundation (LSF), a global 501(c)(3) nonprofit. I want to re-emphasize our mission, the powerful impact we're striving to make through our grant funding, and call on members of my community to get involved and #donate today. One of the projects we are currently funding is a transformational study of heart health and aging at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics - University of Oxford, as deaths linked to heart disease account for nearly one-third of all mortality. Transparency is at the heart of what we do. NYSC CDS (ALL PICS and VIDEOS): MULTIPLE MALLS IN LAGOS COVERED, AS OCI FOUNDATION VOLUNTEER CORPS MEMBERS (FROM 2023 BATCHES B1 AND B2) EXPAND ANTI-CANCER MESSAGES (LAGOS, NIGERIA; 20/04/2024). On Saturday, April 20, 2024 (for the second time in just 4 weeks), scores of OCI Foundation Volunteer Corps Members (VCMs) with the 2023 Batch B Stream 1 and 2 Cohorts who are currently serving with the NYSC in Lagos State undertook another outreach inspired by the OCI Foundation’s Arm Our Youths Anti-Cancer Campaign project. The VCMs engaged thousands of Nigerians at this event, which was delivered as part of their Community Development Service (CDS) program inspired by the OCI Foundation’s Arm Our Youths (ArOY) Anti-Cancer Health Initiative. The current outing covered multiple shopping malls in the Somolu, Ojo, Island, and Ikeja areas of Lagos. They delivered messages on breast and cervical cancer sensitization/awareness campaigns. This is the second of these outings by these same VCMs in Lagos. On March 21, 2024, they also help outings in the Aguda and Census Markets at Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria. The ArOY Health Campaign is an OCI Foundation initiative partly delivered in partnership with the NYSC (another part targets youths in all Nigerian senior secondary schools). The then-Nigerian First Lady, Her Excellency Dr Aisha Buhari, flagged off the NYSC-OCI Foundation partnership event in a colourful and star-studded ceremony that was held on February 3, 2022, in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory. The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS), the Nigerian First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), and the Sweet Home Africa Humanitarian Foundation (AHAHF), alongside other groups, are all partnering with the OCI Foundation on the delivery of this Nigerian national project. The OCI Foundation is an international NGO that promotes Health, Education, and Social/Public Welfare activities among Nigerians. The Foundation looks forward to supporting more VCMs at individual or group levels in all of Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT in the delivery of the ArOY Health Campaign to their various communities. Any VCM that has ever identified with the OCI Foundation since February 2022, irrespective of the cohort (year and batch of deployment) with the NYSC, can participate, even if such a person is no longer in active NYSC service. In early 2023, the OCI Foundation introduced the “Personal CDS Challenge” to incentivize VCMs who embark on their CDS activities with the ArOY Campaign Project. Using relatable messaging and creative outreach, they can increase participation among their age group. 2️⃣ University Blood Donation Programmes Establish regular donation drives at universities and colleges, integrating them into student orientation programmes. Students can be incentivised to donate, such as through community service credits or recognition programs. 3️⃣ Social Media Engagement Utilise social media platforms, popular among the youth, to promote blood donation events and share inspiring stories. Campaigns can motivate young people to donate and influence their networks. 4️⃣ Mobile Blood Donation Units Implement mobile donation units that visit schools, colleges, and community centers, making it convenient for young people to donate blood. These units can create a festive atmosphere and appeal to the youth's social nature. 5️⃣ Peer-to-Peer Fundraising and Challenges Encourage young people to participate in peer-to-peer fundraising challenges where they raise awareness and funds for blood donation initiatives, creating a sense of competition and camaraderie. 6️⃣ Educational Workshops Organise workshops in schools and communities that explain the blood donation process, address myths, and highlight its life-saving impact.
