"The intensification of book bans and challenges – both in schools and public libraries – threatens our democracy by limiting learning about diverse experiences. Being able to read stories where we see ourselves reflected, come to understand experiences and identities beyond our own, and value our humanity is crucial to being able to dialogue and work together." It is Banned Books Week. For reference, per the American Library Association: Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. By focusing on efforts to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Typically (but not always) held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. Celebrate the Freedom to Read. Read Banned Books. #BannedBooksWeek #FreedomToRead

While “books usually are challenged with the best intentions," for example, to shield children from “difficult ideas and information,” The American Library Association (ALA) notes that censorship itself can actually be quite harmful. Per the ALA, Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2024) “brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read.” In recognition of Banned Books Week, let’s discuss the benefits and importance of reading banned books. Here’s a plot twist that’ll leave book banners speechless: 92% of parents TRUST librarians to pick the perfect reads for their kids! This stat bomb comes courtesy of @NEAtoday, and it’s more powerful than a overdue fine! Turns out, parents see librarians as superheroes, not supervillains trying to corrupt young minds with...gasp...books! Why are some school boards acting like the antagonists in a bad library drama? Where’s the logic in silencing shelves when parents overwhelmingly believe librarians are reading rockstars? @everylibrary and @bookriot surveyed over 1000 parents, and the message is clear: Pro-censorship groups are NOT speaking for the majority! Parents want their kids to explore the world through stories, not have their options limited by a boardroom banhammer. Let’s share this post, tag a parent or educator who needs to fight the good fight, and make some noise! Trust in librarians is louder than any book ban attempt! Let’s keep the library love strong and the books flowing freely! #EmpowerLibrarians #CensorshipIsLame #ReadingChampions #readbannedbooks #bannedbooks #bannedbookclub #reading#readingtime📖 #readmorebooks #librarian
