Our changing world - how Chinatowns in several Asian countries have changed. Focus on Chinatowns in Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, India, and Malaysia. Throughout history, the diaspora from China has traveled the world to forge livelihoods, giving rise to distinctive Chinatowns. Over time, each Chinatown has evolved. The current Chinese diaspora remains one of the largest in the world, along with the Indian, Russian and Mexican diasporas.

The Peranakan Chinese, also known as the Straits Chinese or Baba-Nyonya, represent a unique cultural group whose roots trace back to the early interactions between Chinese traders and local communities in Southeast Asia. Predominantly found in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and southern Thailand, the Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled in the region centuries ago and intermarried with local Malays and Thais. This blending of cultures gave rise to a rich and distinctive heritage characterized by vibrant customs, cuisine, language, and traditional attire. The Peranakan Chinese not only bridge the cultural landscapes of their host countries but also serve as living embodiments of historical trade and cultural exchange in the region. Their enduring influence on local societies highlights the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity in Southeast Asia.

🇹🇭 🇨🇳 Thailand is still very much Thai, but you can’t ignore how much China has influenced culture here—especially in Bangkok. Around 11-14% of Thailand’s population is of Chinese descent, making it the largest minority group. But even beyond that, the presence of Chinese culture is undeniable. During Chinese New Year, Bangkok lights up red, Chinese flags hang alongside Thai ones, panda teddies appear on the streets, and businesses go all out. This year, it also seems like Thailand is making an extra effort to be attractive to Chinese travelers. Over the last six months, Thailand hasn’t had the best image in China, with rising crimes targeting Chinese tourists and residents. So, the CNY celebrations this year feel like part of a wider push to rebuild trust. 📌 For us, the impact was obvious—Bangkok’s infamous traffic just disappeared. A commute that usually takes 45-50 minutes took only 17 minutes on the first day of CNY. That’s a clear sign that a lot of companies gave their teams time off, showing just how deeply Chinese culture is embedded in Thai society. On that note, Happy Chinese New Year! 🧧
