September 7 marked my third anniversary as President and General Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF. When the news begins to overwhelm me, I think about all I've learned as the head of this fierce organization and what amazing work our staff, board, and allies do. Three lessons for each of my three years at LatinoJustice PRLDEF: One, our collective experience, cred, and resolve can fuel us through any turbulence ahead. In the past three years, I've learned how deep LJP's pioneering history goes in serving our communities in key areas of advancement and well-being: jobs, education, housing, and voting. While some of today's challenges are, to use an oft-repeated word, unprecedented, we know the baseline issues well and have always found bold strategies to tackle them and win. Two, you always have to make time to renew old ties and make new friends. One ingredient in LJP's "secret sauce" is that we have nurtured a broad network of community partners and supporters that spans business, government, and community advocacy. Running a non-profit can take all your time and more, but whenever I sit with the head of a new grassroots organization or reconnect with a longtime colleague, I always come away fired up and raring to go. Three, a non-profit's success depends as much on a committed Board as on a committed staff. And that goes double for a committed Board chair. Our outgoing Board chair, José Ramón González, has been my stalwart partner in dreaming big dreams for our organization. Our new Board chair, Fernando Bohorquez, Jr., is another great advocate for LatinoJustice's priorities and power. And lucky me, they are both fun to work with! The founder's journey is always interesting. One of the reasons we were able to scale Team Rubicon was because we hit the road HARD. Every conference, every meeting. We never said no. We pressed the flesh. Shook hands. Kissed babies. I booked nearly a million flight miles hitting 2-3 cities a week. When we started Groundswell I thought it might be different. Didn't COVID make the conference circuit obsolete? Hadn't I established enough credibility as a CEO in the social impact space that I could afford to build from the comfort of LA? On top of that, it was one thing to be a road warrior when I was a newlywed and my wife was living in NYC, equally committed to her career grind. But it's a whole other thing to do it with two adorable girls at home that get sad every time I tell them I have to get on another airplane the next day. Turns out, building relationship-based businesses hasn't changed all that much. I've been on the road five of the past six weeks and the impact to our pipeline and brand equity has been tremendous. I may not like it, but my time on the road isn't over. Of course now I take more red eyes and make every effort to script every hour of each day on the road. Like they say - "if it was easy, everyone would do it." Today, we'd like to take a moment to share a local success story that is near and dear to our hearts. 💛💙 Erin Suelmann is Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis. She shared the organization's perspective on strategic planning: why they do it, and how it will help them make an impact over the next five years. "The Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis is a nonprofit serving 2,200 individuals with Down syndrome in Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois. We are in the business of helping individuals with Down syndrome of all ages reach their full potential and helping families plan for their children's future. In order to fulfill our mission, our organization must also plan for our future. It is essential that we develop a strong, thoughtful strategic plan so that we can appropriately respond to and deliver on the needs of our constituency. This allows us to stay relevant and to invest our resources in areas that will be most impactful for those we serve. In order to develop our plan, we worked with Eicon Partners to engage our community to document their needs, assess the landscape of services available in the region, and determine the unique ability of the DSAGSL to fill gaps and provide services to make the biggest positive impact. Our strategic planning process included engaging those we serve. We hosted focus groups and sent surveys to gain feedback from over 250 stakeholders. This input drove the plan through every stage. Another essential component of our planning process was engagement of our board of directors and staff in determining our goals, strategies and action steps. We want to ensure that every one of our stakeholders, from those we serve to the people who will be implementing the plan, feel ownership of the goals and strategies decided upon. I am excited for the next five years as we work with Eicon Partners, DSAGSL Staff and our Board of Directors to strategically implement this ambitious plan so we can, as Susan Conrad says 'achieve results on purpose' for those we serve!" It has to be how do we improve…and drive sourcing of products that are sustainably and ethically sourced…how is the value chain being transparent…how do we choose our nonprofit partners? And, per Artis Stevens “at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America we saw biggest growth during pandemic was of 18-25 year olds seeking help. So we started helping with career mentorship. So, yes we faced challenges, but we saw opportunities to evolve. It’s not just what I can do for you but how can we create greater relevance for the communities we are serving.” Hence - they are now the preeminent youth mentoring brand in the country.
