UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Success or failure of a community development project depends upon engagement. Community must own the process, lead the process and enjoy the process. This must begin form development of the development idea so that it reflects their felt needs. The too many white elephants we see across the world are nothing but a product of top - down approach. Development practitioners thinking on behalf of project beneficiaries or participants, whatsoever you call them. Meaningful community engagement calls for radical leaders who are good public engagement experts not public speakers..... engagement is dialogue while public speaking is often monologue, the rest are mere listeners, shaing their heads.

My Personal Key to Successful Community Development Projects Dear Colleagues, As we keep asking the intricacies of community development, I want to share a foundational principle that has been guiding my efforts toward success. In Philippians 2:3-5, I find profound wisdom that resonates deeply within the realm of collaborative projects. “Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves especially the persons of concerns (PoCs). And look out for their interests, not your own.” These verses encapsulate the essence of what makes any community project thrive. When we approach our work with humility and a genuine desire to uplift others, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. Here are a few key takeaways that can enhance our approach to community development: 1. By prioritizing the needs of the community over our personal ambitions, we foster trust and collaboration. Successful projects are built on the foundation of mutual respect and shared goals. 2. Actively considering the perspectives and interests of others allows us to create solutions that address the real challenges faced by community members.
