What is the difference between civil and general construction? 🤔 Civil Construction: In a sentence, Civil Construction is all about building the infrastructure that supports a society. 🏙 From waterways, to powerplants, bridges and roads, to the foundations of high-rise buildings, every project we take on helps shape the world we live in. This is what Civil Construction means to us, helping shape our society and improving the world we live in. General Construction: General Construction on the other hand focuses on building things that fit in with a society. Once the foundations and infrastructure have been laid, it is their role to build the function of that space. Think about a high rise apartment building. Building and construction teams would be involved in the construction of the actual building, but it is Civil teams who are required to dig the basements, do the bulk earth works, and lay the foundations to allow this to happen. This is a great example of how both Civil and General Construction teams can work hand in hand to shape the world we live in. This week we are taking a look at this residential development project in Clacton-On-Sea, Essex, where our Civil Engineering and Sustainable Drainage Design teams provided full surface water drainage management design services to our client. The client planned to transform a 1.36-hectare plot of previously unused greenfield into 10 private dwellings. The site abutted the main B-Road, with each plot to be accessed via a single shared entrance off this carriageway. As with all residential and commercial developments we had to consider how it might impact local water systems to minimise the risk of surface water flooding. We worked with the client to design a system that would manage surface water discharge, keeping it as close as reasonably possible to the natural rate at any given site. Our team pride ourselves on being able to seamlessly integrate all necessary systems into the overall project design. In this instance, tailored solutions for the roof and roadway run-off detailed a pair of on-site interlinked detention basins, linked via a culverted pipe. The proposed systems not only manage the surface water run-off for the development but also ensure water quality and provide biodiversity on the site. Just like every other industry market trends play a significant role in shaping our industry. When there’s a shortage of builders, it has a ripple effect, especially since they often handle large-scale projects. If flats and commercial buildings aren't being constructed, it impacts us all. I’ve been particularly focused on the commercial construction sector lately. The builders who take on their own projects drive a significant part of our industry, and I make it a point to collaborate closely with them. The small industrial sector is also on my radar; it’s growing and requires a lot of excavation, soil filling, and development of interconnecting roads. Recently, I've found myself paying more attention to soil treatment and management. It’s becoming increasingly important for the integrity of all types of construction projects, and it's an area I'm committed to focusing on.
