It looks funny at best, a little ‘out there’ at worst… until you learn what’s going on. Then, confusion turns to awe. Or, like in my case, a literal “awwwww.” In wildlife rehabilitation, every action is purposeful, even if it looks unconventional. Take, for instance, the heartwarming story of a fox kit being raised at a wildlife center. The staff, in an effort to prevent the kit from becoming imprinted on humans, wear a fox mask and take other precautions during feedings. It may seem amusing to an outside observer, but the intent behind it is profound. As someone deeply connected to the world of animals, I find this story resonates with me profoundly. It reminds me that sometimes, making real change for animals means leaving behind unwarranted embarrassment and embracing opportunities to laugh at and with ourselves. The goal of wildlife rehabilitation is not just to care for animals in need but to ensure their successful reintegration into their natural habitats. In the case of this particular fox kit, rehabilitators worked to find other kits of the same age and weight within the rehabilitation community. These kits will eventually be released back into the wild together, where they can thrive as part of their species' population. It's heartening to see the dedication and ingenuity of those working in wildlife rehabilitation, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of our collective efforts to protect and preserve the natural world. “I had someone out last year, but the (squirrels/woodpeckers/raccoons) are back again. Can you do what the other company couldn’t?” The problem is not necessarily the last wildlife company our new client hired. They may have done everything within their knowledge and ability to resolve the issue at that time, but there is a dirty secret with wildlife that you need to have spent sometime in the industry to know and understand. The bigger issue something we at Huntsman refer to as generational imprinting. Just like us humans have a special connection to our hometown, wildlife looks at the place they were born and spend their first weeks in as a safe place to raise their young. They see it as “if it was safe enough for me to become a successful adult, then my offspring will be safe as well.” Without proper removal, exclusion, and prevention techniques, a reoccurring nuisance wildlife problem is inevitable. In wildlife rehabilitation, we normally focus solely on how such care benefits wildlife and our ecosystems. However, writer Margaret Renkl eloquently describes how wildlife rehabilitation can heal both the animals being cared for and the humans who, with their whole hearts invested, go above and beyond to care for and protect wildlife. "Rehabbers go to extraordinary lengths to save every injured animal. If they can’t save the animal, they can at least give it a merciful death. And they can take the opportunity to explain why it’s so important to walk the yard before mowing, giving wildlife of all kinds a chance to flee. Each animal in rescue represents a human being who has learned something important about living more gently in the world. Peek-a-boo… we see you! That hole in the roof is about 4 inches wide and has squirrel chew marks all around it. This new client has a history of squirrel problems in their home. Two other wildlife companies charged the client for squirrel trapping. However, listening to their description of the noises, and seeing some other sign around the property, we were certain they were no longer dealing with squirrels so we set a camera and confirmed our suspicions. Current Patient: Eastern Cottontail Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital recently admitted two Eastern Cottontail adults that had been raised from juveniles for several months by a member of the public (one pictured). Fall is the time of year where we see the most “raised by finder” animals admitted for rehabilitation. This can be a frustrating time for Wildlife Rehabilitators because many of these animals come in unhealthy, habituated, or imprinted. While some of the animals may not be physically injured or ill, we consider habituation and imprinting to be mental “injury.” Because the public is not trained to work with wildlife to keep them wild, and most times raise them as they would a companion animal, Wildlife Rehabilitators are left with the difficult task of “fixing” these issues. Quite often, the physical and mental ramifications of improper care cannot be fixed. Our Wildlife Rehabilitators are working to assess the behaviors of these Eastern Cottontails in hopes that they will be released. This is the goal for all of the animals that are brought to Cedar Run for care, but it is important for our team to ensure that those animals are well-equipped to be on their own. Please remember, it is illegal in New Jersey to rehabilitate wildlife or keep wildlife if you are not a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. AZA-accredited facilities are leaders in #Conservation and play a key role in rescuing and rehabilitating endangered, threatened, and confiscated wildlife. 🏛️ Federal and state conservation agencies consistently turn to AZA-accredited zoos, aquariums, and other facilities to rescue and rehabilitate injured and confiscated #Wildlife. Our members' expertise and exceptional animal care have laid the groundwork for our thriving collaborations with government entities. A prime example is the Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Reintroduction Act (WR3), developed with the help of #AZA. 🤝 Recognizing the crucial role of AZA members in wildlife conservation, Rep. Andrew Garbarino and Rep. Mike Quigley introduced this bipartisan legislation. Wildlife tracking makes part of the whole concept of wildlife health. A good tracker must become keenly attuned to the animal he or she is tracking, one must also remain aware of all other stimuli (information) in his or her environment, both internal ans external. One's safety as a tracker in the wild depends on remaining present employing the felt sense that he is being watched by other curious animals. Personally, from my experience of this "Felt sense" I have been able to find beauty in what otherwise might be perceived as Mundane-a twig, a caterpillar, a drop of few on a leaf and fulfilled by a deep sense of well-being. For wild animals that naturally carry this "Felt sense", these instinctual responses mean survival-offering the capability for attunement and oneness with the environment that will keep them alive.
